Memoir of the Sunday Brunch
Memoir of the Sunday Brunch | Julia Pandl
7 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
For Julia Pandl, the rite of passage into young-adulthood included mandatory service at her familys restaurant, where she watched as her fatherwho was also the chefruled with the strictness of a drill sergeant. At age twelve, Julie was initiated into the rite of the Sunday brunch, a weekly madhouse at her fathers Milwaukee-based restaurant, where she and her eight older siblings before her did service in a situation of controlled chaos, learning the ropes of the family business and, more important, learning life lessons that would shape them for all the years to come. In her wry memoir, she looks back on those formative years, a time not just of growing up but, ultimately, of becoming a source of strength and support as the world her father knew began to change into a tougher, less welcoming place. Part coming-of-age story a` la The Tender Bar, part win- dow into the mysteries of the restaurant business a` la Kitchen Confidential, Julie Pandl provides tender wisdom about the bonds between fathers and daughters and about the simple pleasures that lie in the daily ritual of breaking bread. This honest and exuberant memoir marks the debut of a writer who discovers that humor exists in even the smallest details of our lives and that the biggest moments we ever experience can happen behind the pancake station at the Sunday brunch.

That moment when you know you‘re going to love the brunch spot for today. We try to find the little local dives when we travel. This one has a menu item called “Mikki‘s Choice” where the chef owner waitress picks what you get. ♥️

Cinfhen Sounds like a plan to me!!! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen And oh! The food was scrumptious. I was full and couldn't stop eating. 😎 6y

🔹I'm a brunch kind of girl, but I love to make breakfast in bed for my boyfriend. 🍳
🔹Somewhere in between. Photo is my favourite leggings. I'm a BIG leggings fan on weekends.
🔹A bit of both! Today I'm driving home while listening to an audiobook and I'll binge some TV tonight.
🔹Always coffee. ☕
🔹Thrillers. I strongly dislike romance. 🙅❤

Richryan52 @kendrastephaniekaryn Are you a Sherlock Holmes fan? 7y
Richryan52 @kendrastephaniekaryn Would you be interested in reading one of my books? Titles are The Vatican Cameos and The Stone of Destiny. They are both on Amazon and Goodreads 7y

🌟Brunch! Can't get enough brunch.
🌟Both- sleep in but then I always put on clothes (because brunch mostly)
🌟read all day, today I know I'll be reading all afternoon while football plays in the background
🌟Tea! Already had my first cup. I normally don't need coffee on weekends when I can sleep.
🌟 on weekends I like something light and engrossing. Normally for me that means some sort of YA sci-fi or fantasy.

Leelee.reads Except for coffee/tea, we're a match! I ❤️ brunch - it can only be done on weekends and feels so luxurious and escapist! 7y
PandaPanda @Leelee.reads yes! I am currently at brunch right now... 7y

Here is my current view while reading this Sunday afternoon. It is actually pretty cool and there is a slight breeze. This has been very rare here recently in NE Ohio. I am enjoying it very much.

Quick heartwarming read. Julia brings us along as she looks back over her life as baby of a large family working her younger years a the family's restaurants. Mostly reminiscing of time spent with her father George and their sweet and evolving relationship.
