I know its #GypsyRoad not Gypsy Rose, but when I think of the word gypsy, I think of the incomparable Gypsy Rose Lee.

(Day 8 - #GypsyRoad)

*I‘ve only ever thought of Gypsy Rose Lee when I hear the word “gypsy.” My rather eccentric aunt took me to the show when I was very young—she expressed such shock that there were naked women & bawdy talk in the play—I never believed that act (my aunt‘s) for a minute! If you remember Gypsy (b&w left) as the “Queen of Burlesque,” perhaps you also remember Fanny Brice (b&w right). Dita Von Teese is at top right.

Weaponxgirl Love dita and burlesque 6y
Crazeedi Gypsy broke lots of taboos for her time, she followed her dream maybe, I've not read any biography about her, now I have to look for one 6y
CarolynM She was all I could think of too🙂👍 6y

Cinfhen My first thought too but I only know the name... don‘t know much else about her 🤷‍♀️ 6y
gradcat @Weaponxgirl Me, too—I‘m such a big fan of Dita‘s! 🥰 6y
gradcat @Crazeedi Her dream or her mother‘s—Mama Rose—but it ended up working out for her anyway. How are you feeling? 6y
gradcat @CarolynM & @Cinfhen I think she was way cool. So I‘m not the only one, eh? I guess we‘ve all seen the movie with Natalie Wood. 🥰 6y

Finished this today! This memoir could be used in a class on creative nonfiction. She builds verisimilitude through convincing specificities (“we had three cans of sardines and ate them on graham crackers”) and a knack for dialogue you can almost hear. It‘s a portrait of a dying culture replaced by another that soon passes away. She shows us these layers of history and loss padded with a pleasing blend of sawdust and mink, rhinestones and pearls.

It is crazy how close the musical stays to her story. “Let me entertain you” is definitely the idea behind this memoir! Enjoying it much more than I expected.

1. My trip to NYC!
2. Winter 💙❄️💨
3. Not specifically, I love lots of historical fiction, but I get really tired of wartime historical fiction, particularly WWI/II
4. Probably

GypsyKat Great answers! Enjoy your trip! 😀 7y
