Once Upon a Tower
Once Upon a Tower: Number 5 in series | Eloisa James
9 posts | 25 read | 13 to read
Gowan Stoughton of Craigievar, Duke of Kinross, values order and self-control above all else. So when he meets a lady as serene as she is beautiful, he promptly asks for her hand in marriage. Edie - whose passionate temperament is the opposite of serene - had such a high fever at her own debut ball that she didn't notice anyone, not even the notoriously elusive Duke of Kinross. Her father accepts his offer, but Edie's inability to hide her feelings makes pretending impossible, and when their marriage implodes, she retreats to a tower - locking Gowan out. Now Gowan faces his greatest challenge. Neither commands nor reason work with his spirited young bride. How can he convince her to give him the keys to the tower . . . when she already has the keys to his heart?

This is a grudging pick because it certainly wasn‘t my favorite of the Fairytale retellings, but it dealt with some issues like infertility and sexual incompatibility. Not your typical romance topics. The MCs were both stubborn and unable to communicate properly, which *is* typical, but seemed especially annoying here. But I loved the revelations and the HEA, and it made me want to listen to Yo-Yo Ma. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼1/2

GypsyKat Great review! I often find her books to be both enjoying and annoying. 6y

I have been looking forward to reading this fairytale series. I love retellings and a dash of spice should make them even better. However, this take on Rapunzel was only tangentially related to the original and the sex scenes were uncomfortable to read. The heroine is in pain and wishing it would end, while the hero obliviously plows on. And on. And on. Maybe I‘m feeling overly sensitive due to the news cycle, but I did not enjoy this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one because it was so utterly unusual for a historical romance, in some great ways. Male lead not promiscuous? And is a reader who loves to throw out Shakespeare references? Addressing actual difficulties of a several-years-old marriage? Honest discussions of sex? The narrator‘s intonation irritated me at first, but once conversations got going, I thought her accents were great (and learned some correct pronunciations!).

#Librarystory 😁👏🏻! I had this lovely patron came up to the Reference Desk and ask for help in finding a great romance novel. It would be the first one she'll ever read. So, guess who I directed her to? 😆👏🏻 Yep, to @EloisaJames ! She chose this title from the bunch. You'll have a new fan on your hands, Eloisa, and she intends to join Litsy. 😎👍🏻👍🏻 #LitsyLovesLibraries

EloisaJames Yay! That's an interesting first choice--I hope she's not looking for an alpha because that's my Romeo & Juliet meets Rapunzel--they are both virgins! 8y
MrBook @EloisaJames Lol, I told her to let me know her verdict when she returns it 😎👍🏻. 8y

Dear heaven is the female protagonist whiney. I am 3/4 done and just can't do it. There's none of the other intrigue and intricate subplots that I've gotten with other books by the author. I want my women to take charge, not be shy virgins who are afraid to tell their husband that sex sucks for a majority of the book. Maybe it gets better, but it's not engaging enough for my commute.

Just what I needed this tiring, stressful week! One of Eloisa James's fairy tale series, this one weaves some Shakespeare, John Donne, Vivaldi, and Rapunzel into a tender story. The plot drama is caused by marital problems of a type not as often dealt with in historical romances, and I found it really drew me in.

Also, fans of Julia Quinn will love the references to the Smythe-Smiths.

Recommended. #romantsy
