In honor of Martin Luther King Day, consider learning more about the Civil Rights Movement. It definitely wasn't started by a simple moment on a bus, it was well planned. And it was built on many years of the rape of black women and children. As well as other abuses and murders of black bodies. Our history books white wash and over simplify it.
pickThis was such a tough read mentally. TW for sexual assault. Yet again more history not taught in school. Imagine giving birth to 23 children and 20 of them being a product of rape. Or a white man rapes a 7 year old and only gets parole. That was justice in the south. The stories are enraging. I learned a lot about the movement, & much of it was thanks to many women who didn't get their proper credit. An important read to learn our true history.
Current book in progress. It turns out Rosa Parks wasn't just some sweet old lady who had enough one day. She was actually an activist from the beginning. This book is very good but also very disturbing. I'm learning a lot about history that was never taught in my school. And I'm willing to bet not at most high schools. I find that incredibly sad.

pick⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I would give this book 6 stars if I could. An incredible work of history that sets the record straight about Rosa Parks, and the long years of organizing and activism by many Black women who are conveniently left out of much Civil Rights discourse and history.
Listened to this mix while reading the book on the bus. Just as in the history of the CRM itself, the mix doesn‘t have enough Black women in it. The book is simply freakin‘ fantastic though.

pickLong before Rosa Parks remained in her seat, she was a top investigator of sexual assaults for the NAACP. That was all it took for me to pick this up. So much here that I knew nothing about -- must read for anyone interested in civil rights. Absolutely riveting -- and I have so much admiration for these women -- willing to speak out even when it put their lives in danger. Go get this one now -- more people need to be talking about it.
My book haul from A Room of One's Own earlier! The top three are ones I bought. At the Dark End of the Street and Lakota Woman have been on my buy list for a while and I happened on the third book of essays written by American Muslim women. The bottom row are all free ARCs I scored from their leftover stash! Excited about Forty Autumns because I want to read more about East/West Germany during the Berlin Wall.
