Students can learn a great moral lesson from this TL book adapted by Jerry Pinkney. This book is a Caldecott Award winner about a duckling that is mistreated by others because he looks different. The Ugly Duckling can be used for RT AND RA in the classroom. ESOL strategy 50 can be used well during RT. UDL 8.4 can be used to promote student feedback on the book and the moral lesson it provides.

DrSpalding I like the idea of a readers theater for this particular story. It could then be followed up by a good discussion about what the true meaning of the story is all about. This is classic traditional literature. 6y

The Ugly Duckling, a traditional literature picture book, is retold by Jerry Pinkney and has won the Caldecott Honor artist and the Coretta Scott King Award multiple times. It is a fantastic story about a little “duck‘s” journey as he grows up. All of his brothers and sisters call him ugly and give him a hard time because he looks different than them. He goes through many hard times growing up, until one day he realizes he isn‘t actually a duck,

morganhillman but he is a beautiful swan instead. This book is great for children because they learn that the moral of the story is that being different is beautiful and that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This book would be best used as a shared reading (SR) followed by the lesson activity.

morganhillman The UDL principle 8.3, foster collaboration and community, is met because after the read aloud, the students have group discussions and talk about how important it is to accept everyone and create a loving community. The EL 3, encourage self-talk(positive thinking), is met while the students are constantly thinking about how great it is to be diverse and all of the positives that come from the differences we each have.

Hello! I'm Freddy. I grew up in a land far away! I used to be known as the ugly duckling, and I'm sure you all know the story! The wrong egg was delivered to my mummy so growing up I was different, ugly some people said, then I matured into a beautiful swan.
