Fish in a Tree | Lynda Mullaly Hunt

Pickpick

Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt is a wonderful RF novel to bring into the classroom. This New York Times Best Seller follows the story of ally a young girl who struggles to read, but is embarrassed to admit defeat and ask for help. As a result she acts out and feels misunderstood. This is a great book to engaged troubled students with as they can relate to ally.

juliette_kathleen I would use this book as a SR as I‘d want my students to get their fill on their own, really process how they personally feel about the text, and then share that with the class. I would follow this lesson plan http://www.chicagonow.com/between-us-parents/2015/08/fish-in-a-tree-discussion-g... 7y
juliette_kathleen This lesson plan provides great questions that support higher order thinking which aligns with EL strategy 36. This lesson plan also provides discussion prompts which end up supporting UDL 9.2 and develops coping skills along with promoting group work UDL 8.3. #UCFLAE3414SP18 7y
JessicaC I love this book! Great lesson Jule! 7y

Wonderstruck | Brian Selznick

Pickpick

Wonderstruck, a TL, written by Brian Selznick is another fantastic must read. This book is a Newbery award winner and has also been adapted into a film. This book is two stories in one, one taking place in the 20‘ and the other 50 years later in the 70‘s. This book sheds light on the life of a dead person and highlights the idea of fitting into a family in which you don‘t quite fit in.

juliette_kathleen For this book, I would make it a choice in an LC and assign the following lesson plan https://www.louisianabelieves.com/docs/default-source/teacher-toolbox-resources/.... I would have the students study deaf culture and also the art of collaborating a story in pictures with a story in words. This will incorporate EL strategy 44, and 47. It will also meet UDL principle 2.4, 3.1 and 7.2. #UCFLAE3414SP18 7y
devin.s I‘ve heard of this book before! This looks super interesting, I will definitely have to read this! 7y
DrSpalding Many of the books you believe to be traditional literature are actually a different genre. This book, being that it takes place in the present and past is actually realistic fiction and historical fiction. 7y

Frindle | Andrew Clements
post image
Pickpick

This RF by Andrew Clements is a great novel for students to choose for LC. Grinder is great because the text is completely relevant to their school lives. Frindle is a book about a student who convinces his classmates to call a pen a frindle as a prank. This book can be relatable for kids who tend to get into trouble here and there. I would keep this as a choice book but also assign these comprehension quizzes as worksheets as well

juliette_kathleen https://www.readinga-z.com/book.php?id=2984. With these worksheets students would be able to relate to an on going theme of vocabulary and have the opportunity to explore the dictionary themselves. This would support UDL principle 2.1 and as an LC it would support 7.1. I would also be sure to have the students put these vocabulary words into sentences in groups which would support EL strategies 11 and 10. #UCFLAE3414SP18 7y
devin.s I remember reading this in elementary school!! Such a great book, I will definitely have to get a copy for my classroom! Love your resource! 7y

The classic Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister is a TL perfect for a RA. The rainbow fish provides a great morale for kids to grasp which is that no mater how you look, you should be treated equally by all. I would definitely utilize this lesson plan https://www.teacher.org/lesson-plan/rainbow-fish/ because it incorporates so many UDL principles and EL strategies. Of these the lesson plan includes UDL 9.3 and 7.2.

juliette_kathleen It also touches upon EL strategies 1,2,8 10, 11,15, 17, and 39. #UCFLAE3414SP18 7y
paulettevp I had no idea this book was traditional literature. I grew up loving this book. I wore out my copy of it because I read it so much. I took it everywhere so you can imagine. I love that the lesson plan has both an opportunity for independent work but also collaboration with peers. (edited) 7y

Silly Sally | Audrey Wood

Pickpick

Silly Sally a form of TL by Audrey Wood is a really sweet and fun book I used to love reading when I was younger. Silly sally is a sing song book that tells a silly story about a girl who goes to town walking backwards upside down. This is a great book for CR. https://study.com/academy/lesson/silly-sally-lesson-plan.html to support this lesson plan I would hold a group discussion rather than a written response.

juliette_kathleen With this different form or response, I would be supporting EL strategy 8 and 10. I would also be implementing UDL principles 5.3, 3.3, and 2.2. #UCFLAE3414SP18 7y

She Persisted, a B and New York Times Best Seller by Chelsea Clinton is a fantastic picture book for kids. This book is a narrative for women who have taken on their own struggle to power and have come out on top. This book is an empowering book for young girls especially to be able to persist no matter how much Of a disadvantage they may find themselves in.

juliette_kathleen I would utilize this book in my classroom as a RA. I would also be sure to use the writing prompts as provided in the following lesson plan https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/She-Persisted-Writing-Activity-and-B.... This lesson plan encourages students to develop critical thinking skills and coping skills (UDL 9.2). I would also be sure to pre define the word persist along with a few other vocabulary words 7y
juliette_kathleen Which would cover EL strategies 31, 36, 3, and 5. #UCFLAE3414SP18 7y

This HF New York Times Best Seller, Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly is a spectacular picture book to show your students. This book is about for women who worked behind the scenes at NASA and are long over due for credit that was not given due to civil rights issues. This book would be a tremendous RA for the introduction to the civil rights movement.

juliette_kathleen https://www.pixton.com/schools/teacher-resources/lesson-plans/hidden-figures This site provides an amazing and fun follow up activity to check comprehension. Students will be able to express themselves through their digital creations yet still be able to demonstrate their comprehension of the story. This lesson would meet UDL principle 4.1 as this is a unique way to demonstrate knowledge. It will also incorporate EL strategy 30 as the strips will 7y
juliette_kathleen Provide a visual conception of their comprehension. #UCFLAE3414SP18 (edited) 7y
Kendallc Love how that it has women in science, that‘s great for showing girls they can work there too! 7y
paulettevp Didn‘t this story get turned into a movie? You could also use this book for Women‘s History Month. What I like so much about using this for the Civil Rights Movement, it‘s that this narrative hasn‘t been taught about enough because I don‘t think many people think about the women behind scientific breakthrough and giving them the recognition that they deserve especially because of their race. 7y
DrSpalding When it says true story, it is not fiction. Look at your flipbook to remind yourself what historical fiction entails. Excellent idea to read this book aloud. Excellent movie! 7y

Grace for President | Kelly S. DiPucchio

Pickpick

Grace for President a RF by Kelly DiPucchio is a fantastic picture book that highlights political areas such as an election. This story is about two students who campaign against each other until polling time comes around. I would use a RA strategy for this book as I‘d really like for the students to hear the pronunciations of new words properly. I would be sure to introduce the vocabulary prior to the RA which would support UDL 2.1 and EL 5.

juliette_kathleen I would include this lesson plan into this unit https://study.com/academy/lesson/grace-for-president-lesson-plan.html. With this lesson plan I would also be able to cover EL strategy 9 as we would utilize and practice with T lists. #UCFLAE3414SP18 7y
WendyV I really like this book! It‘s so inspirational for young girls as well as any student. There are so many benefits and ways of using it in the classroom. I love the lesson plans you included! 7y

Wonder a RF by R. J. Palacio is a New York Times Best Selling novel that has recently been adapted into a film. Wonder is a beautiful story about a boy Auggie who has Treacher Collins Syndrome. He enrolled in traditional school at the start of fifth grade. As a reader we experience the highs and the lows in all with Auggie. This book truly gets you to be aware of others and thinking about how you can better yourself to help others.

juliette_kathleen I would use this book as an LC in my classroom. https://www.georgiastandards.org/resources/Documents/GOSA-5th-Grade-ELA-Unit-Pla... I would follow this lesson plan as it provides great writing prompts to get students thinking about their actions and how they can affect others. This lesson plan incorporates UDL principle 3.2 because the writing prompts help students maintain the main idea of the text. 7y
juliette_kathleen I would also implement EL strategy 38 and assign short readings to be done at home to save time in class and allow each reader to get through the section at their own pace. #UCFLAE3414SP18 7y

The One and Only Ivan | Katherine Applegate

The One and Only Ivan a TL by Katherine Applegate is a Newbery Award Reciever. This heart breaking novel is about a gorilla in a zoo who is understanding of humans but also grows resentful for rightful reasons. I would have this in my classroom as an LC. http://www.stemread.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/One-and-Only-Ivan-Habitat-Hom... I really love the idea of incorporating a math lesson with this book as this site suggests.

juliette_kathleen This LC book will meet UDL 2.3 and will require the implementation of EL strategy 44. I will ensure this by Stating the objective prior to the lesson which will give more to the students that they are to make a prediction and after their observations, they will be to report back their findings. #UCFLAE3414SP18 7y

Invention of Hugo Cabret | Brian Selznick

The Inventions of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick (RF) won the Caldecott Award and has been adapted into a motion picture. This book is a must read! This book is about an orphan boy in Paris who lives amongst the clock machinery in the train station. He runs into an issue with a vendor who accuses him of stealing. As a punishment he steals Hugo‘s personal belonging and the remainder of the book is Hugo and his new friends efforts to keep it safe.

juliette_kathleen For this book I would use the following lesson plan along to support IR. http://novelinks.org/uploads/Novels/TheInventionOfHugoCabret/Unit%20Plan.pdf This lesson plan will meet UDL principles 8.3, 4.1, and 5.2. A Wrinkle in Time | Madeleine L'Engle

Pickpick

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L‘Engle( F) is a reliever of the Newbery Award. It was also adapted into a movie in recent months. In my opinion the adaptation was right on point and a must show for the kids as a treat. This novel is about children who go on an adventure in time in search for their father. This book deals with evil forces and time traveling. I would use this book as an LC.

juliette_kathleen I think this is a great option for kids to read on their own and come together to discuss and debrief their journey in the text. I would also follow up with this lesson plan https://www.madeleinelengle.com/wordpress2/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/WIT_lesson... 7y
juliette_kathleen I think this lesson plan along with the LC Teaching Strategy would subsequently ensure that UDL principle 6.3 is met, as students would be managing information with peers and on the assigned worksheets. I would also incorporate EL strategy 34 which will ensure that all students take the individual time they need to produce their best written work. #UCFLAE3414SP18 7y

Children of the Great Depression written by Russell Freedman is an amazing NF picture book. It won the Orbis Pictus award in 2006. This book is a documentation of the lives of children during the Great Depression. Russel uses numerous illustrated archival photographs, diaries, letters and other primary documents to tell their story. This lesson would be amazing to use in a social studies section.

juliette_kathleen I really love this lesson plan http://www.utahmoca.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/A-Lemony-Story.pdf. I think it sends an amazing message as well as teaches a valuable life skill. I would likely use SR for the initial half of the lesson. This lesson would utilize EL strategy 9& 10 as I would have the students pair up and make a T chart for their own misfortunes compared to those in the book. I would have students pair up to discuss. 7y
juliette_kathleen This would also utilize UDL principle 8.3 and 9.2. #UCFLAE3414SP18 7y

Falling Up by Shel Silverstein is poetry (P) and has won the Golden Archer Award, ALA Booklist Editors Choice, Maine Student Book Award, and Parents Choice Gold Award. It is a fantastic book filled with poems relating back to the central theme of looking at the world from a different angle. This book would be great as a RA. Following the RA I would follow the lesson plan provided at this link

juliette_kathleen The UDL principle 2.1 would be met as the students fill out their worksheets. Additionally, EL strategy 4&5 would be used as the pictures would access background knowledge and give a word and definition to the object as well. #UCFLAE3414SP18 7y

The Giver by Lois Lowry is an amazing piece of SF. The book has won the Newbury award and was adapted into a movie. This novel is about an alternate reality where emotions and ‘knowledge of the past‘ are erased from memory. The reality in this book is a place where everyone has a designated purpose and does as they should replicating ideas of a utopian society, that is until Noah is informed by The Giver (of memories and emotions).

juliette_kathleen This book would be perfect as an IR. This book is great for examining text structure including conflict climax and resolution. The following link provides a great guide to use when preparing a lesson on this novel. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/giver-lesson-p... 7y
juliette_kathleen Through the implementation of this lesson plan, EL 9, 5, 7, and 16. This lesson plan also touches on UDL principles 3.3 & 3.2. This book does an amazing job at getting you to think. Creativity tends to spark creativity and that is why I think this book is so fitting for independent reading and written responses. #UCFLAE3414SP18 (This book was also adapted into a movie and would serve as a relevant in class treat for the students.) 7y

The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum is a classic piece of MF. This novel is about a girl named Dorothy who experiences a tornado at home in Kansas and bumped in the head by debris. She dozes off as a result and finds herself in a land called Oz where she meets the Lion, the scarecrow and the tin man. They help her find her way down the yellow brick road in efforts to get her back home. Along the way they experience many obstacles.

juliette_kathleen This book would be a great choice for an LC followed by this lesson plan https://www.brighthubeducation.com/history-lessons-grades-9-12/127690-the-wizard.... This lesson plan is amazing and I plan to use it in the future to reinforce the effects of the Great Depression. It‘s so genius and I would‘ve never thought of it. 7y
juliette_kathleen Through the use of the LC approach, EL 2, 4, 10, and 12 will all be met. A great way to add to the LCs would be of course to add the movie in which help meet UDL principles 1.3& 2.5. I am so excited to test this lesson plan out in the future as I have a huge love for this story. 7y

Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBrantley & Anita Jeram is a wonderful TL and more specifically a fable to bring into the lower grades. This book is about a little hare and a big hare who love each other very much. The hares go back and forth trying to out-love each other. https://nzmaths.co.nz/resource/guess-how-much-i-love-you The previous link provides a lesson plan for this book to incorporate basic math concepts like big bigger and biggest.

juliette_kathleen Using this lesson plan along with a RA will incorporate the UDL principle 3.1. By activating this prior knowledge needed to read this book, this will also cover EL 5 as it reinforces or teaches the students new vocabulary and concepts. Overall this book does an amazing job at the portrayal of reciprocated love. #UCFLAE3414SP18 7y

The 2008 Caldecott award winner, Henry‘s Freedom Box by Ellen Levine & Kadir Nelson is a fabulous HF book. This book takes place in the south when slavery was legal. The book is about a slave named Henry who decides to ship himself to the north (to freedom). It is an excellent book and is great to use as RA and ST as described in the lesson plan found in the following link

juliette_kathleen https://www.scholastic.com/content/dam/teachers/lesson-plans/migrated-featured-f... This lesson plan will follow the UDL principle 6.3 as you facilitate their connections they are making between the text and the illustrations. This activity meets EL 6 as the RA and SR require the teacher to stop and ask guiding questions. Overall this is a great book to show your students when introducing the underground railroad. 7y
Laura.S @juliette_kathleen I recently read and Litsy posted on one called “Freedom Song” which talks about Henry and his gruesome journey. But he always sings a song to calm him, especially in the box! I love when books can be paired with others. 7y

A Good Day | Kevin Henkes

Pickpick

Caldecott award winner, A Good Day by Kevin Henkes, is a great (RF) book for grades K-1. This book does a fabulous job illustrating just how easily a bad day can be turned into a good day based on perspective. This book would be excellent for a (RA) guided by the lesson plan found at https://www.iowanationalguard.com/Family%20and%20Services/Youth%20Programs/Docum... followed by (RT).

juliette_kathleen The initial use of the RA will enforce comprehension through guided questions as advised in UDL principle 3.3. The follow up of RT will then optimize relevance, value, and authenticity for the students as suggested in UDL 7.2. The implementation of RT will support EL 50 as the students will have the chance to role play. Overall this book has a great message and I intend to use this book to help my students focus on the positives. #UCFLAE3414SP18 7y
