Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt is a wonderful RF novel to bring into the classroom. This New York Times Best Seller follows the story of ally a young girl who struggles to read, but is embarrassed to admit defeat and ask for help. As a result she acts out and feels misunderstood. This is a great book to engaged troubled students with as they can relate to ally.

juliette_kathleen I would use this book as a SR as I‘d want my students to get their fill on their own, really process how they personally feel about the text, and then share that with the class. Wonderstruck, a TL, written by Brian Selznick is another fantastic must read. This book is a Newbery award winner and has also been adapted into a film. This book is two stories in one, one taking place in the 20‘ and the other 50 years later in the 70‘s. This book sheds light on the life of a dead person and highlights the idea of fitting into a family in which you don‘t quite fit in.

I would have the students study deaf culture and also the art of collaborating a story in pictures with a story in words. This will incorporate EL strategy 44, and 47. DrSpalding Many of the books you believe to be traditional literature are actually a different genre. This book, being that it takes place in the present and past is actually realistic fiction and historical fiction. 6y

This RF by Andrew Clements is a great novel for students to choose for LC. Grinder is great because the text is completely relevant to their school lives. Frindle is a book about a student who convinces his classmates to call a pen a frindle as a prank. This book can be relatable for kids who tend to get into trouble here and there. I would keep this as a choice book but also assign these comprehension quizzes as worksheets as well

This would support UDL principle 2.1 and as an LC it would support 7.1. The classic Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister is a TL perfect for a RA. The rainbow fish provides a great morale for kids to grasp which is that no mater how you look, you should be treated equally by all. I would definitely utilize this lesson plan https://www.teacher.org/lesson-plan/rainbow-fish/ because it incorporates so many UDL principles and EL strategies. Of these the lesson plan includes UDL 9.3 and 7.2.

paulettevp I had no idea this book was traditional literature. I grew up loving this book. I wore out my copy of it because I read it so much. I took it everywhere so you can imagine. I love that the lesson plan has both an opportunity for independent work but also collaboration with peers. (edited) 6y

Silly Sally a form of TL by Audrey Wood is a really sweet and fun book I used to love reading when I was younger. Silly sally is a sing song book that tells a silly story about a girl who goes to town walking backwards upside down. This book is a narrative for women who have taken on their own struggle to power and have come out on top. This book is an empowering book for young girls especially to be able to persist no matter how much Of a disadvantage they may find themselves in.

This HF New York Times Best Seller, Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly is a spectacular picture book to show your students. This book is about for women who worked behind the scenes at NASA and are long over due for credit that was not given due to civil rights issues. This book would be a tremendous RA for the introduction to the civil rights movement.

paulettevp Didn‘t this story get turned into a movie? You could also use this book for Women‘s History Month. What I like so much about using this for the Civil Rights Movement, it‘s that this narrative hasn‘t been taught about enough because I don‘t think many people think about the women behind scientific breakthrough and giving them the recognition that they deserve especially because of their race. 6y

Grace for President a RF by Kelly DiPucchio is a fantastic picture book that highlights political areas such as an election. This story is about two students who campaign against each other until polling time comes around. I would use a RA strategy for this book as I‘d really like for the students to hear the pronunciations of new words properly. I would be sure to introduce the vocabulary prior to the RA which would support UDL 2.1 and EL 5.

Wonder a RF by R. J. Palacio is a New York Times Best Selling novel that has recently been adapted into a film. Wonder is a beautiful story about a boy Auggie who has Treacher Collins Syndrome. He enrolled in traditional school at the start of fifth grade. As a reader we experience the highs and the lows in all with Auggie. This book truly gets you to be aware of others and thinking about how you can better yourself to help others.

The One and Only Ivan a TL by Katherine Applegate is a Newbery Award Reciever. This heart breaking novel is about a gorilla in a zoo who is understanding of humans but also grows resentful for rightful reasons. I really love the idea of incorporating a math lesson with this book as this site suggests.

Invention of Hugo Cabret | Brian Selznick

The Inventions of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick (RF) won the Caldecott Award and has been adapted into a motion picture. This book is a must read! This book is about an orphan boy in Paris who lives amongst the clock machinery in the train station. He runs into an issue with a vendor who accuses him of stealing. As a punishment he steals Hugo‘s personal belonging and the remainder of the book is Hugo and his new friends efforts to keep it safe.

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L‘Engle( F) is a reliever of the Newbery Award. It was also adapted into a movie in recent months. In my opinion the adaptation was right on point and a must show for the kids as a treat. This novel is about children who go on an adventure in time in search for their father. This book deals with evil forces and time traveling. I would use this book as an LC.

Children of the Great Depression written by Russell Freedman is an amazing NF picture book. It won the Orbis Pictus award in 2006. This book is a documentation of the lives of children during the Great Depression. Russel uses numerous illustrated archival photographs, diaries, letters and other primary documents to tell their story. This lesson would be amazing to use in a social studies section.

juliette_kathleen I really love this lesson plan http://www.utahmoca.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/A-Lemony-Story.pdf. I think it sends an amazing message as well as teaches a valuable life skill. I would likely use SR for the initial half of the lesson. This lesson would utilize EL strategy 9& 10 as I would have the students pair up and make a T chart for their own misfortunes compared to those in the book. I would have students pair up to discuss. 6y

Falling Up by Shel Silverstein is poetry (P) and has won the Golden Archer Award, ALA Booklist Editors Choice, Maine Student Book Award, and Parents Choice Gold Award. It is a fantastic book filled with poems relating back to the central theme of looking at the world from a different angle. This book would be great as a RA. Following the RA I would follow the lesson plan provided at this link

The Giver by Lois Lowry is an amazing piece of SF. The book has won the Newbury award and was adapted into a movie. This novel is about an alternate reality where emotions and ‘knowledge of the past‘ are erased from memory. The reality in this book is a place where everyone has a designated purpose and does as they should replicating ideas of a utopian society, that is until Noah is informed by The Giver (of memories and emotions).

The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum is a classic piece of MF. This novel is about a girl named Dorothy who experiences a tornado at home in Kansas and bumped in the head by debris. She dozes off as a result and finds herself in a land called Oz where she meets the Lion, the scarecrow and the tin man. They help her find her way down the yellow brick road in efforts to get her back home. Along the way they experience many obstacles.

A great way to add to the LCs would be of course to add the movie in which help meet UDL principles 1.3& 2.5. I am so excited to test this lesson plan out in the future as I have a huge love for this story. 6y

Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBrantley & Anita Jeram is a wonderful TL and more specifically a fable to bring into the lower grades. This book is about a little hare and a big hare who love each other very much. The 2008 Caldecott award winner, Henry‘s Freedom Box by Ellen Levine & Kadir Nelson is a fabulous HF book. This book takes place in the south when slavery was legal. The book is about a slave named Henry who decides to ship himself to the north (to freedom). It is an excellent book and is great to use as RA and ST as described in the lesson plan found in the following link

Laura.S @juliette_kathleen I recently read and Litsy posted on one called “Freedom Song” which talks about Henry and his gruesome journey. But he always sings a song to calm him, especially in the box! I love when books can be paired with others. 6y

Caldecott award winner, A Good Day by Kevin Henkes, is a great (RF) book for grades K-1. This book does a fabulous job illustrating just how easily a bad day can be turned into a good day based on perspective. This book would be excellent for a (RA) guided by the lesson plan found at https://www.iowanationalguard.com/Family%20and%20Services/Youth%20Programs/Docum... followed by (RT).

juliette_kathleen The initial use of the RA will enforce comprehension through guided questions as advised in UDL principle 3.3. The follow up of RT will then optimize relevance, value, and authenticity for the students as suggested in UDL 7.2. The implementation of RT will support EL 50 as the students will have the chance to role play. Overall this book has a great message and I intend to use this book to help my students focus on the positives. #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y
