Your Alien | Tammi Sauer

Pickpick

This Book is a cute take on SF. When an alien comes from space, do you keep it? How do you break the news to your parents? Will your alien want to stay forever? This could be a great inspiration for a class book or extension for a writing prompt. In addition to writing, here's an activity that could connect science as well: http://www.unawe.org/resources/education/design_your_alien_activity/ #ucflae3414su17

Angiepuc Interesting questions make me want to read it! Looks adorable too! 7y

Mo Willems has created a wonderfully sassy and hysterical character, the Pigeon. In this F book, the Pigeon finds a hot dog and finds himself sharing (unwillingly) with the Duckling. Great book to read to younger kids who are learning to share. The Pigeon has his very own app, too! http://m.pigeonpresents.com/pigeonpresents/apps #ucflae3414su17

DrSpalding Buy the plush and books at Kohls! Students love Mo Willems books and hilarious characters! 7y
SamanthaPuglisi I love this book! Children go crazy for the pigeon 😄 7y
Kennedys @DrSpalding @SamanthaPuglisi I already purchased the Pigeon, duckling, and knuffle bunny from Khols 😄I know they will come in handy one day! 7y

This B about Martin Luther King Jr. is a great addition to any classroom library. Doreen Rappaport writes beautifully while telling the story about MLK's life and movement he worked so hard towards. Check out the authors website to see what other B books she has written! http://doreenrappaport.com #ucflae3414su17

StefanieS Such a high quality book, with amazing artwork! I agree with you this should be in every classroom, and even more of this authors books. 7y
DrSpalding Yes! Well said @StefanieS and I agree that Rappaport's books should be in all elementary classroom libraries! Nice resource!😉 7y

Eric Carle says this is his favorite book because it teaches children about friendship! This F is very visually appealing and shares a simple message that I recommend sharing with children of younger ages. Here's a lesson plan that pairs well with the story: http://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewResourceUrl/Preview/36220 #ucflae3414su17

Elizabethhunt96 This book looks super cute! I like that it's Eric Carle too! I love elephants! 🐘 7y
DrSpalding This would make a simple yet lovely storytelling @Kennedys ❤️📚 7y

Perfect!! I'm so glad I found this amazing NF book written by Kira Vermond and illustrated by Julie McLaughlin. It writes in detail about WHY we live here on earth and HOW! Includes facts about currency, the workforce, outer space, and more!! Check out some more of Kira's books here: http://www.kiravermondkids.com/books/ #ucflae3414su17

Elizabethhunt96 This sounds super cool! I was going to be a biology teacher before switching to elementary so this seems like it's definitely up my alley! 7y
DrSpalding This does sound cool! This could answer many questions that even adults may have! Great find! 7y
casandraopont @Kennedys this looks like a great read. I know a lot of my kids draw blanks when we discuss location. This book would definitely put things into perspective. 7y

Adapted by Jerry Pinkney, this TL is an amazing addition to any classroom library. The Ugly Duckling teaches readers to be true to themselves and great things will come. Here is an activity to complete while reading: http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/fairy-tales-from-... #ucflae3414su17

StefanieS What a great activity to go with the story, awesome moral to the story. 7y
tfundora Love the underlying messages that the ugly duckling story tells. Will always be a story you tell your kids and students. 7y
gracemccleskey I've read this to VPK kids before! It went over fairly well and I like the lesson plan you've included along with this. 7y

Though I've seen the movie, this is my first time reading this (P) work of art by Dr. Seuss. Not only is this a great book to read during the Christmas season, but it shares a lesson of forgiveness. Recommended for children in grades pre-K-2, but I think it is great for all ages! Visit this link for games, videos, and more on Dr. Seuss's website: http://m.seussville.com/activities.html

Angiepuc I remember my mom always use to read this to me when Christmas time and then I was allowed to watch the movie after the book. This book is a classic. 7y
DrSpalding You can't go wrong with Dr. Seuss nor his website. Many individuals have text to self connections with this particular author. 7y
SamanthaPuglisi I love this story so so much! The book is just as wonderful and timeless as the movie. 7y
Diana_S I actually saw the movie before reading the book, both were amazing! Dr.Suess is a gifted genius. 7y

The One and Only Ivan | Katherine Applegate

Pickpick

This F novel based on a true story is an excellent read for all ages. Ivan, a silverback gorilla, lives at the Big Top Mall by exit 8, off of I-95. He has spent a majority of his life there, until one day when everything changed for good. The writing style and character profiles made this book a hard one to put down! Here are some extension activities to try after reading: http://www.flreads.org/Book_Award/extensions/Ivan.htm #ucflae3414su17

DrSpalding This is a powerful story and you accompanied your post with an excellent resource.❤️🦍 7y
Ashleywwolfe I am definitely adding this to my stack! The fact that it's kind of a local setting makes it more interesting. A cool idea would be to have kids search on the real story for prereading too! 7y

Owl Moon | Jane Yolen
post image

This Caldecott Medal (HF) book is written by Jane Yolen and illustrated by John Schoenherr. It shares a special relationship between a young girl and her father as they search for owls in the moonlit sky. The beautiful illustrations are a great addition to this story. Here is an extension activity I found on Scholastic! https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/owl-moon-exten... #ucflae3414su17

DrSpalding While this book is of high quality and surely is poetic, the genre is not usually poetry. Look at your flipbook. Scholastic is an excellent resource to include. Well done. 7y
Kennedys Thank you @DrSpalding! I will find a book that better fits the poetry genre to add to my responses. 7y

Enemy Pie | Derek Munson, Tara Calahan King
post image

Enemy Pie is an RF picture book, sharing the tale of a new neighbor in town, who is also the one and only enemy. This story is great for young readers who are learning the real meaning behind friendship. Here is a link for a read aloud and teacher activities: http://www.storylineonline.net/books/enemy-pie/#YouTube #ucflae3414su17

DrSpalding This is an excellent choice. If the content could occur, this would be RF rather than F. Check your flip book. Storyline online is fantastic! Be sure your URL is hyperlinked in the post! 7y

Wonder | R. J. Palacio

This feel-good RF novel is one to remember! "Auggie", faces his toughest year yet; 5th grade! His display of bravery, kindness, and positivity help him overcome the highs and lows of middle school. R.J Palacio writes to show the true meaning of the saying, "don't judge a book by its cover". I dare you not to shed a tear!Check out this trailer that gives a little insight into Auggie's life: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fgB7_KpBDss&feature=youtu.be

tfundora I have been wanting to read the book before watching the movie! Can not wait to read!:) Looks like a amazing read! 7y
DrSpalding The passion you felt for this book came through in your post. The YouTube extension, is a valuable resource as well. Way to go Kennedy. 7y
