The Story of the Night: A Novel | 
pickThe storytelling is brilliant, it did pull me under its spell. But there's smth about the MC - the detachment, the self-entitlement at times, the feeling that smth is missing while accompanying MC on his journey. The third part of the novel is way better and there's smth melancholic and terribly real about the pain and the fear exposed. A good story about weakness & selfishness but also about love, courage and incredible loss.
When I meet an AIDS doctor who's rude, I'll know this plague is over.
Toibin's character reflects on the power of nationalism as the attack on the Malvinas/Falklands (temporarily) brings people together.
So...apparently this is a huge hole in my reading! These are the only two I could find set in South America in the last three years (since I started keeping track of setting). I could add more if I included Central America and the Caribbean...and one more by an AUTHOR from SA but set in Germany. Need to get reading! #booktober
The first part of the book is a mess, boring and narcissistic. the political elements don't seem to gel with the love story. And the story isn't cohesive. But I got slowly sucked in by the sex scenes, which are ethereal, and the ending is divine, if a tad predictable and mushy.
pick#Recommendsday These pics have nothing to do with what happens in The Story of Night, but they have everything to do with what happens when you become totally absorbed in a book while your toddlers are finger painting. Before you judge me, just know it's an amazing book! Fascinating, thrilling, suspenseful and masterfully written. Toìbin is one of the best craftsmen writing today. As for these two they're teens now who love art and books ???
I've started both copies and gotten distracted each time. But I'm determined to finish because Colm Toibin is so great.... #severalcoverssunday
