The Yellow Wall-Paper, Herland, and Selected Writings
The Yellow Wall-Paper, Herland, and Selected Writings | Charlotte Perkins Gilman
Wonderfully sardonic and slyly humorous, the writings of landmark American feminist and socialist thinker Charlotte Perkins Gilman were penned in response to her frustrations with the gender-based double standard that prevailed in America as the twentieth century began. Perhaps best known for her chilling depiction of a woman's mental breakdown in her unforgettable 1892 short story 'The Yellow Wall-Paper', Gilman also wrote Herland, a wry novel that imagines a peaceful, progressive country from which men have been absent for 2,000 years. Both are included in this volume, along with a selection of Gilman's major short stories and her poems. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators. From the Trade Paperback edition.

🐈🐈🐈🐈🐈 Herland was a fantastic story. There were so many things in it that were spot on when it comes to male/female interactions. The Yellow Wallpaper was really good too. Also, finishing this book helped me to finish my Goodreads challenge for the year. Woooo! 🏆

'Woman' in the abstract is young, and, we assume, charming. As they get older they pass off the stage, somehow, into private ownership mostly, or out of it altogether.

I'm totally feeling this as a middle aged woman.

Libby1 If you like this check out Herland. 🙂 8y
minkyb Your comment made me chuckle! 8y
minkyb @Libby1 what a coincidence, my daughter just asked for Herland for the holidays! 8y

suvata Love this short story 8y
Foxyfictionista @Libby1 I should have mentioned but this is Herland. I haven't gotten to the Yellow Wallpaper yet. Litsy doesn't have the same version of the book as I do. It's backwards. ☺️ 8y
Foxyfictionista @minkyb This passage hit me right in the gut. I'll be interested to see where the story goes. 😃 8y
Foxyfictionista @suvata I'm actually reading Herland but Litsy doesn't have the same version that I do. I'm looking forward to The Yellow Wallpaper though. It looks intriguing. 8y

"When the mother of the race is free, we shall have a better world."--Happy birthday to Charlotte Perkins Gilman, 1860-1935. Great writer, feminist icon, sassy woman, and master at throwing literary shade at shifty men & the patriarchy. May we live up to your example. ? #ReadWomen

Loreen I love The Yellow Wallpaper. It's one the things I read that lead to me embracing feminism. 8y
quirkyreader I recently found the film on You Tube. It's a mostly faithful adaptation. Now would be the prefect time to make a film of Herland. 8y
KristenAber Herland is one of my favorites and her collection of essays shaped my personal feminism. 8y

BookishFeminist @Loreen ditto--I read The Yellow Wallpaper in high school and never looked back. That, and Shirley Jackson's The Lottery. 8y
BookishFeminist @quirkyreader Oh man, Herland would be great for film adaptation. I've never watched The Yellow Wallpaper--I'll have to find that on YouTube! 8y
BookishFeminist @Kmaber Ditto--I *love* Herland and am currently rereading it on Serial Reader & really enjoying her snark! What is this you speak of a collection of essays? 🤔 What is it called? 8y
KristenAber The copy I had of Herland also had some other short stories. She has some nonfiction too, like Women and Economics. Worth checking it out! 8y
BookishFeminist @Kmaber Thanks! I started rereading Herland and immediately went to get her collected works (fiction & nonfiction) off Scribd. I'm so excited! 🤓 8y
