Otaku is the debut novel from former NFL player and tech enthusiast Chris Kluwe, with a story reminiscent of Ready Player One and Ender's Game... At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

📚🎧 MEH ... I bought it for the cover 😫 it‘s a Ready Player One / Ender‘s Game type book ... but not nearly as good. A young girl is the kick ass MC. Sadly there‘s a ton of sex thought that takes you out of the childlike wonder or fun of the other two books. POSSIBLY more truth but I think I might have preferred more substance ... I know ... so not like me ... 😆 but it just didn‘t speak to me. Happy Friday!! 🤗 ... ⭐️3/4

Otaku is a Japanese word for someone to whom fandom is life. They live their fandom day to day, in and out. It is everything, so much so that it can damage and even eradicate their social life. And it‘s the perfect title for this book. Take Ready Player one, and mix it with Warcross and you get this book. The game is life. Most people play and even work within the game.

LibrarianRyan Most everyone is in Candyland, but only the best can climb the ladder for all the fame and glory. However in future Florida (now called the Southern Protectorate) where society is based on religious rules, being a woman is somehow less than being a man, and being a woman at the top of the leader boards makes you target for those who want you put in your place. But the game is really just training missions to make better soldiers, and only the 4y
LibrarianRyan best can take over the world. Overall I really enjoyed this read. The ending was totally predictable, but the ride to get there was fun. I loved the kick ass females. I loved all the diversity, it didn‘t feel forced. However, I wish it was more prominent that the lead was Black. It was almost buried and easily skipped over. You can not tell from the cover that the character is Black, and with an Asian world title it would not have been an 4y
LibrarianRyan easy guess. Other than that, no complaints. A fun escape read.

4⭐️My #bookspin title wasnt bad. It had a predictable ending but the ride was fun. It‘s like Ready Player One was mixed with Warcross.

I‘m also calling this #fakediversity for the #BBRC challenge. The main character is Black but it‘s not in the description or noticing by the cover. Longer review later.

And he‘s demon got a hold of the book cover. 👿

Twainy This hardcover is siting on one of my TBRs 😁 bumping it up. 4y
Kenyazero When you specify that it's fake diversity, is it because the book doesn't describe that he is black or something else? I was a little confused. 4y
LibrarianRyan @Kenyazero a bit yes. Also main character who is black but written by white authors. In this case the former is true, you also have a Black char who not only points out their skin color and how it makes life harder than just being a female warrior gamer. There is a lot of diversity. There is a hijab/ burka wearing char, a genderfluid char. main char. is bi, and there is a plus Nerodiverse, and onegenetic abnormality. It‘s the opposite of Own voic 4y

This wouldn‘t bother me so much if I didn‘t know it goes on in the real world outside this book.

@Branwen hey my drink matches my book too!

TracyReadsBooks I heard Kluwe speak about this book in late February—he was on a panel with several other authors at C2E2—right before we had to shelter in place and I have to say, it feels like a lifetime ago. I do remember he was very entertaining. 4y
Branwen Hahahaha! Fantastic! 👍💖 4y
LibrarianRyan @TracyReadsBooks it‘s been interesting so far. I bought for the cover, won‘t lie about that. It‘s so far a cross between Ready Player 1 and Warcross. The outside the game world sounds very interesting. I‘m enjoying it so far. 4y
TracyReadsBooks @LibrarianRyan Definitely sounds interesting. I look forward to your review! 4y

Seems to be another version of Ready Player One, which I liked. May turn out different.

Some February TBR: a few books I need to finish up from January, some library books, and trying to get through my ridiculous backlog of netgalley arcs.
