The Cay | Theodore Taylor

I enjoyed the evolution of Phillip's and Timothy's relationship. I feel that Taylor wanted to combat ingrained racism in writing this book. It was harsh. Phillip's attitude was ugly, but he learned to love Timothy and to realize that Timothy was needed. It is #fakediversity, but there weren't many own voices in the 60s. Thank goodness that is changing. #BBRC @Sarahreadstoomuch @LibrarianRyan

tpixie I read this in 6th grade- back in the 70‘s. Loved it. 3y
LibrarianRyan Yeah. I love this book so much. Years later he wrote a sequel Timothy of the Cay. Not as powerful but still great. 3y

I need recommendations for a book of fake diversity for readers younger than 16. Google isn't helpful for this prompt. #BBRC @LibrarianRyan @Sarahreadstoomuch

Thanks in advance.

Lovesbooks87 I used the tagged book. One of the characters was trans and the author isn‘t . 3y
Sarahreadstoomuch I used Eleanor & Park because upon rereading it, it felt like Park was half-Korean to be “diverse” but it isn‘t really explored in any real way. Another reader has used Ghosts by Raina Talgemeier due to way Asia de Los Muertos is portrayed (not authentically). Hope this helps! 3y
Butterfinger @Sarahreadstoomuch I was slowly going through the tagged posts. I should have done that first. I have read Eleanor and Park already. Hmmmm. 3y

Sarahreadstoomuch @Butterfinger I loved it when I first read it! And this reread was EYE OPENING 3y
Butterfinger @Sarahreadstoomuch Rainbow Rowell is one of my favorites. I haven't read Wayward Son. Would that work for the prompt? I love discussing books. LOL. 3y
Sarahreadstoomuch @Butterfinger I suppose it could as she‘s not gay, right? And it is a great book😊. It‘s a tough category and I think you‘ll know #fakediversity when you read it (and we‘re not going to grade you afterwards!)lol (edited) 3y
LibrarianRyan I agree. No grading. I just used the Royal Guide to monster slaying. Loved the book but the main character is dark er and even thinks about their skin difference with the mountain clan. If you want a great book that was part of the original conversations we were having when I wrote this category check out the cat. It‘s short and has a sequel. It‘s even about racism. It was one of my favorites growing up. I still love it even though it‘s considered 3y

Mehso-so

Finished this reread for book group tomorrow night; 8 years since I‘d first read this. It did not age well. And while Eleanor‘s story still reads as tragic as ever, my discomfort comes more with being more aware of Park‘s character. It feels like a case of #fakediversity where he is half Korean just to be an other, a matched misfit to E‘s redhead with a terrible family situation. I‘m still processing. I loved this the first time. Now...

LibrarianRyan Ahhh. Former staff member spent years telling everyone hoe glorious 100 years of solitude was. The book club she hosted at the library decided to read it, so she did a reread. 20 years later and a different perspective, she couldn‘t understand what she used to see in it. 3y
Butterfinger I was wondering about this one for fake diversity. 3y

4⭐️My #bookspin title wasnt bad. It had a predictable ending but the ride was fun. It‘s like Ready Player One was mixed with Warcross.

I‘m also calling this #fakediversity for the #BBRC challenge. The main character is Black but it‘s not in the description or noticing by the cover. Longer review later.

And he‘s demon got a hold of the book cover. 👿

Twainy This hardcover is siting on one of my TBRs 😁 bumping it up. 4y
Kenyazero When you specify that it's fake diversity, is it because the book doesn't describe that he is black or something else? I was a little confused. 4y
LibrarianRyan @Kenyazero a bit yes. Also main character who is black but written by white authors. In this case the former is true, you also have a Black char who not only points out their skin color and how it makes life harder than just being a female warrior gamer. There is a lot of diversity. There is a hijab/ burka wearing char, a genderfluid char. main char. is bi, and there is a plus Nerodiverse, and onegenetic abnormality. It‘s the opposite of Own voic 4y
