It's Not the Stork!
It's Not the Stork!: A Book about Girls, Boys, Babies, Bodies, Families and Friends | Robie H. Harris
4 posts | 1 read
From the expert team behind IT'S PERFECTLY NORMAL and IT'S SO AMAZING! comes a book for younger children about their bodies — a resource that parents, teachers, librarians, health care providers, and clergy can use with ease and confidence. Young children are curious about almost everything, especially their bodies. And young children are not afraid to ask questions. What makes me a girl? What makes me a boy? Why are some parts of girls' and boys' bodies the same and why are some parts different? How was I made? Where do babies come from? Is it true that a stork brings babies to mommies and daddies? IT'S NOT THE STORK! helps answer these endless and perfectly normal questions that preschool, kindergarten, and early elementary school children ask about how they began. Through lively, comfortable language and sensitive, engaging artwork, Robie H. Harris and Michael Emberley address readers in a reassuring way, mindful of a child's healthy desire for straightforward information. Two irresistible cartoon characters, a curious bird and a squeamish bee, provide comic relief and give voice to the full range of emotions and reactions children may experience while learning about their amazing bodies. Vetted and approved by science, health, and child development experts, the information is up-to-date, age-appropriate, and scientifically accurate, and always aimed at helping kids feel proud, knowledgeable, and comfortable about their own bodies, about how they were born, and about the family they are part of.

My 5 year old asked me to read this book to her the other day. I did it but I felt a little awkward on this page where they talk about a "special kind of loving." ?

OrangeMooseReads That would be a bit awkward. 8y
jpmcwisemorgan I like to complain my brother and I knew about sex and babies really early because my mom was a nurse but honestly, I'm glad that my mom was always there to answer questions. Now there are a lot of great books to help with those discussions. 🙂 (edited) 8y

B.Reader I'm sure it was awkward, but I can definitely appreciate a text that is so honest and straightforward with kids! Awesome parenting! 8y
SuperPunkNinja @B.Reader Thank you! 8y
Dolly Easier at 5 years than 15! 8y
SuperPunkNinja @jpmcwisemorgan You're lucky! My mom left it to my school to teach me and they didn't do so good. 🙄 8y
Suzze Good on you to read it! 8y
jpmcwisemorgan @McShelfington Having parents who were pretty open and easy to talk to, that I knew weren't going to flip out, was good. The older I get, the more I realize how lucky my brother and I were. 8y
Daisydo I've told Sean I'll explain it to him, but it's gross and he won't believe me anyway. I bet I can't hold him off for much longer. :) 8y

This book is fabulous for all people with children! It helps open the line of communication so well and helps explain the facts of life (growing bodies, puberty and much more) in simple terms that kids can understand. I'd definitely recommend this book.
