Of Poetry and Protest: From Emmett Till to Trayvon Martin
Of Poetry and Protest: From Emmett Till to Trayvon Martin | Michael Warr
13 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 29 to read
This stunning work illuminates todays black experience through the voices of our most transformative and powerful African American poets. Included in this extraordinary volume are the poems of 43 of Americas most talented African American wordsmiths, including Pulitzer Prizewinning poets Rita Dove, Natasha Tretheway, Yusef Komunyakaa, and Tracy K. Smith, as well as the work of other luminaries such as Elizabeth Alexander, Ishmael Reed, and Sonia Sanchez. Included are poems such as No Wound of Exit by Patricia Smith, We Are Not Responsible by Harryette Mullen, and Poem for My Father by Quincy Troupe. Each is accompanied by a photograph of the poet along with a first-person biography. The anthology also contains personal essays on race such as The Talk by Jeannine Amber and works by Harry Belafonte, Amiri Baraka, and The Reverend Dr. William Barber II, architect of the Moral Mondays movement, as well as images and iconic political posters of the Black Lives Matter movement, Malcolm X, and the Black Panther Party. Taken together, Of Poetry and Protest gives voice to the current conversation about race in America while also providing historical and cultural context. It serves as an excellent introduction to African American poetry and is a must-have for every reader committed to social justice and racial harmony.

#SeptemberSenses Day 20: there is a great deal of #pain portrayed in this poetry collection, and righteous anger, and unrelenting protest that never ceases - and thruout it all, the redemptive beauty of poetry.

Feeling heavy hearted this morning 💔 Finally saw the dash cam footage from the murder of Philando Castile and I am just feeling undone. In the mood to read this collection. 🕯

My personal winner of this book: Sterling Plumpp "I Hear the Shuffle of the People's Feet". This was the one that shook me. To my husband who is going to be out late tonight fighting for justice in our community: "freedom rings/ feel so good/ black out loud/ dancing in the streets/ with the fighting crowd"

Coffee is superfluous when I have this book of protest poetry to wake me up! So far I'm loving Reginald Harris "New Rules of the Road", Tyehimba Jess "Infernal", and Marilyn Nelson "Cells and Windows". Read this to be soothed and inspired! #readersunite #weneeddiversebooks

I have to assume this was published solely with me and my interests in mind. This book is specifically for me. You can read it too.

Zelma Does it include A Wreath For Emmett Till? If you haven't read it, please do. It's published as a picture book but is a heartbreaking and lovely poem. 7y

Some of America‘s most treasured poets write candidly, sometimes with sadness, about anti-blackness in their lives. This is a really solid collection of poetry that makes an important addition to the Black Lives Matter movement, one that celebrates art as a medium for change and healing. —Louise
