On 15 August 778, Charlemagne's army was returning from a successful expedition against Saracen Spain when its rearguard was ambushed in a remote Pyrenean pass. Out of this skirmish arose a stirring tale of war, which was recorded in the oldest extant epic poem in French. The Song of Roland, written by an unknown poet, tells of Charlemagne's warrior nephew, Lord of the Breton Marches, who valiantly leads his men into battle against the Saracens, but dies in the massacre, defiant to the end. In majestic verses, the battle becomes a symbolic struggle between Christianity and paganism, while Roland's last stand is the ultimate expression of honour and feudal values of twelfth-century France. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Perhaps the most poignant moment of the whole epic! God, I love olden lit! My English degree's emphasis was in Middle English. Granted, this was written in Old French, but it fell within the same time period and so it was studied. Do you enjoy the older literature? I enjoy it so!

DivineDiana Yes, I do. Love the beauty of the language! 8y
kspenmoll Read that so long ago in college. Took an integrated year of medieval lit, history, art, music, culture. 😃 8y
LibrarianJen I read this in History 101 way back in the day. I should still have it somewhere. 8y
Texreader History was my major and English was my minor so I read this one and probably many of the same as you. I'm on the fence. I loved the history of it more than the language, with which I struggled. I gravitated more to writing for my degree, which was always my first love. 8y

#BookNDinner! McDonald's edition. MrBook needs his fast food fix before tonight's book club meeting, so here it is. Accompaniment this cool evening: a Big Mac, nuggets with sweet & sour sauce, fries, and Dr. Pepper. MMmmm 😋! Happy reads & happy eats! 😎👌🏻Re-reading this beloved classic of mine for tonight. Poetry is this month's theme.
