From the New York Times bestselling author of Sarah's Key and A Secret Kept comes an absorbing new novel about one woman's resistance during an poque that shook Paris to its very core. Paris, France: 1860's. Hundreds of houses are being razed, whole neighborhoods reduced to ashes. By order of Emperor Napoleon III, Baron Haussman has set into motion a series of large-scale renovations that will permanently alter the face of old Paris, moulding it into a "modern city." The reforms will erase generations of historybut in the midst of the tumult, one woman will take a stand. Rose Bazelet is determined to fight against the destruction of her family home until the very end; as others flee, she stakes her claim in the basement of the old house on rue Childebert, ignoring the sounds of change that come closer and closer each day. Attempting to overcome the loneliness of her daily life, she begins to write letters to Armand, her beloved late husband. And as she delves into the ritual of remembering, Rose is forced to come to terms with a secret that has been buried deep in her heart for thirty years. Tatiana de Rosnay's The House I Loved is both a poignant story of one woman's indelible strength, and an ode to Paris, where houses harbor the joys and sorrows of their inhabitants, and secrets endure in the very walls...

What a hauntingly beautiful and sad story. Set in Paris during late 1860, it is a story about the Haussmann era in Paris and how the modernization of the city uprooted entire neighborhoods destroying homes the houses generations of families.

I am surprised by the low ratings for this book. Very different from the story behind Sarah‘s Key, there is no way to compare, but I found the writing to be lyrical and lush and the story to be beautiful.

This was a wonderfully fun swap—things that get stuck in a book. Brilliant! Stickers and envelopes and pages out of magazines and tiny plaques. But my favorite was the popsicle stick which she intended for scraping off the word art, but I saw first as the remnants of an ice lolly and it made me smile SOOOOOO big.
@ReadingMermaid thanks for such a clever concept.

kaysworld1 I'm glad you liked it it was my first time doing this and I was so worried 🤗 6y
Tex2Flo @kaysworld1 it was perfect! Spoken completely to the spirit of the swap and was incredibly personal at the same time. I hope you have lots more fun swaps to play in. 6y
KarenUK What a lovely gift! 💕 6y

I‘m getting really picky in my old age/limited time to read/listen. If you can‘t get me invested by the midpoint of the book, I‘m moving on. Normally, I love her work.

This was agony to listen to but I was stubborn (and possibly stupid) and plowed through. 2/5 stars.

Sills Good to know I won't put it on my TBR list. 7y

This week‘s audiobook. Doesn‘t generate a particularly high rating on the charts, but Parisian history always rates high with me. 😊

Also, the red book thing appears to be hereditary, so I had to make a second picture for this with the family heirloom books. #redspines #17rainbowbooks #day1 #bookishgenealogy @jess.how

Having just finished A Bend in the River, I'm hoping for a slightly lighter read. This may or may not be that.

Lcsmcat A quick read, but nowhere close to Sarah's Key. Disappointed. 8y
