The Llama of Death
The Llama of Death | Betty Webb
7 posts | 7 read | 1 to read
Zookeeper Theodora 'Teddy' Bentley takes Alejandro, the Gunn Zoo llama, to a Monterey Bay area Renaissance Faire. Soon after, Teddy stumbles upon the still-warm body of the Reverend Victor Emerson, owner of the local wedding chapel. He is dressed in his royal robes as Henry VIII. At first it appears as if Alejandro stomped the man to death, but a closer look reveals a crossbow dart in the man's back. Teddy's investigation proves the "reverend" is really an escaped convict, and every marriage he's performed in the past twenty years is null and void. He twice married Teddy's ex-beauty queen mother Caro to wealthy men, and when both marriages failed, Caro received large financial settlements. Now she may have to give all that money back. But Caro wasn't the only person with a grievance against Victor. The child of the man Victor once murdered may have wanted to kill him, too. Then Teddy's embezzling father flies in from exile in Costa Rica to help spring Caro from jail, putting his own freedom in jeopardy. Can Teddy solve this case before someone else she knows is implicated?

This was a good, solid, enjoyable mystery. I‘ve found all the ones in this series to be this way. I do love the additional animal tidbits that are added in. I actually liked that many of the characters didn‘t want to talk to Teddy as she tried to find out more to clear her mother‘s name (a little more realistic than many cozies where people just go ahead and blab to the amateur sleuth)

There were blatant continuity errors b/t books 2&3; the author somehow forgot the main character had adopted a 2nd cat? Why would all of these rich/affluent/religious people be getting married by the equivalent of a Vegas drive-thru chapel minister? Are there no actual churches around?? AND WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THE STORYLINE FOR THE ESCAPED, EXTREMELY DEADLY SNAKE THAT NO ONE CARED WAS ON THE LOOSE EXCEPT TO START A TWITTER PROFILE FOR IT?!?

Librariana Wow! This sounds... all over the place! 5y
Merethebookgal @Librariana It really is! A group of friends and I have been reading them for a laugh, but now they‘re making me mad 😆 5y
Deifio Wait what? I'm confused...but if it's good for laughs then it's okay right? 5y
Merethebookgal @Deifio Wait what is right! 😂 I can go with silly, but once all logic is left behind I have a hard time enjoying things. Not to mention most of her sleuthing was breaking & entering into the murder victim‘s chapel/house, stealing evidence, and keeping said evidence from the police. And there were so many names; I kept losing track of who everyone was! 😂 5y

Teddy is no better at investigating than in the prior books; in fact, I do believe she is a bit worse. She probably could've wrapped this up in half the time had she actually used the internet more successfully on her 1st try. Other plot holes exist too, but that being said, the humor is still charming. The characters are still amusing. The animals are still fun & interesting. And a llama named Alejandro helps save the day. What more could I ask?

Going strong with book 3 of this series, in which Teddy finds herself chaperoning llama rides at the local Renn Faire when one of the performers winds up dead. This book did not have enough Sheriff Joe, but I enjoy Caro‘s jail experience.

When @jmtrivera @AlizaApp @Merethebookgal and @Nitpickyabouttrains and I first found out about the Gunn Murder series, we decided to read the first one almost as a joke because the titles seem kind of ridiculous. But, well, I‘m three books in and am attached to the characters, animals included.
