This collection of essays is an eclectic compilation that I truly enjoyed reading. Some essays have insight into Silko‘s novels, others touch on politics, the environment, the Pueblo circular view of time, and her experiences growing up biracial. It definitely made we want to read her novels!

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sounds excellent! Stacking! 6y
alisiakae @Riveted_Reader_Melissa If you can look past the bits of repetition that comes with compiling essays that were previously published in various places, it is an excellent read! 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @4thhouseontheleft I find that true of most essay compilation books.... so consider me fairly warned. 😉 6y
CaitlinR Her CEREMONY is wonderful, and a great place to start. 6y

In this essay, Silko starts off with a direct attack of one of Barbara Kingsolver‘s books, The Bean Trees. Silko makes the point that when an author writes about another culture or community, in this case the Cherokee, and engages in stereotypes, this type of representation has real-life impacts. Silko puts the adoption story in the cultural context of detribalization.

As it happens, I hated The Bean Trees when I read it.

JanuarieTimewalker13 Wow, I can‘t see BK doing that!! That‘s shocking to me. 6y
Emilymdxn Never read any Kingsolver but this is making me really want to read Silko! Is that the author of Ceremony??? I‘ve got it on a shelf somewhere 6y
Megabooks @tournevis Weren‘t we just talking about this today? Smh. 6y

tournevis @Megabooks Yup! It doesn't rain. It pours. 6y
alisiakae @Megabooks @tournevis Now I‘m curious about what you were talking about earlier. 😃😃 6y
alisiakae @JanuarieTimewalker13 I think Bean Tree is BK‘s first book. It wasn‘t very good. And yes, she does play to stereotypes in that book. 6y
alisiakae @Emilymdxn Yes, she is the author of Ceremony! 6y
Megabooks It was the episode of #StarTrekSummerMay, which is one of the worst episodes of the series. tournevis's post on Litsy https://litsy.com/p/c3BmandhTFVz 6y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Yikes, that‘s so disappointing to me, I own the book. I will have to check that out! 6y

I had been wondering about the source for the title of this book, and the essay I am currently reading explains it. Yellow Woman (Kochininako) stories are always female-centered and from the Yellow Woman‘s POV. Her name does not refer to her color, but rather the ritual color of the east.

She is adventurous, strong, and often alienated from her own people.

In the Intro, Leslie mentions the Mayan folding books, which I immediately researched.

Only 4 of these codices survived conquest and colonization, since the Franciscan missionaries burned practically all of them in an effort to eradicate the Mayan religion. 😡Some of the codices are reported to have detailed 800 years of history. An early form of banning books, and it's heartbreaking the history and culture that has been lost.

CoverToCoverGirl Sadly, such is history! 😡 Thank goodness some still survive! 6y
alisiakae @CoverToCoverGirl And maybe someday we will actually learn from history. 6y
Cinfhen I need to read an #indigenousauthour still!!! I don‘t get burning books! Why??? So pointless 6y

Started this at the pool this morning, which means I read two pages. 😂 It‘s impossible to read at the neighborhood pool over Memorial Day weekend. Taking advantage of some quiet time to try again now. This is my #indigenousauthor pick for #Booked2019

Bookwormjillk So true! 6y
Velvetfur Love that picture! 6y
alisiakae @Bookwormjillk My friends were so proud of me for socializing instead of burying my nose in a book the second I arrived. 😂 @Velvetfur Thanks! 6y
