4 posts | 9 read | 2 to read
Return to McFalls County and Bull Mountain in Hard Cash Valley, where Brian Panowich weaves another masterful tale of Southern Noir. Dane Kirby is a broken man and no stranger to tragedy. As a life-long resident and ex-arson investigator for McFalls County, Dane has lived his life in one of the most chaotic and crime-ridden regions of the south. When he gets called in to consult on a brutal murder in a Jacksonville, Florida, motel room, he and his FBI counterpart, Special Agent Roselita Velasquez, begin an investigation that leads them back to the criminal circles of his own backyard. Arnie Blackwells murder in Jacksonville is only the beginning and Dane and Roselita seem to be one step behind. For someone is hacking a bloody trail throughout the Southeast looking for Arnies younger brother, a boy with Aspergers Syndrome who possesses an unusual skill with numbers that could make a lot of money and that has already gotten a lot of people killedand has even more of the deadliest people alive willing to do anything it takes to exploit him. As Dane joins in the hunt to find the boy, it swiftly becomes a race against the clock that has Dane entangled in a web of secrets involving everyone from the Filipino Mafia to distrusting federal agents to some of hardest southern outlaws hes ever known.

For a book that is filled with characters struggling to make it through life, hard core brutality, and greed, Brian Panowich delivers a beautiful story about love and loss. Panowich writes about people, places, and circumstances that are real. There are no healthy families living in pretty houses with white picket fences in his stories.

Mehso-so

Okay. I started this book and it was so good, I immediately decided I needed to read the first two books first. So I did and then it turns out that the third is the worst ☹️ it‘s not bad but the first two were SO GOOD that it‘s just like eh 🤷🏼‍♀️
And I could not stand the female characters. So there were some highlights but it just didn‘t stand up the books 1 and 2.

My guy had emergency surgery this weekend, we still aren‘t sure what exactly happened but he is home and resting. Nothing like an emergency to remind you how much you love your baby. I‘m taking a couple of days to care for him, and I did manage to get some reading done in the middle of the night 😕 good book though.

Hooked_on_books Oh, poor cone baby! That must have been so scary for you. I‘m glad you‘re able to spend a little time with him now as he‘s on the mend. My MIL had this situation a year ago and she‘s so lucky her dog made it (it was really touch and go for a while). It was such a terrible time for them. I really feel for you, going through something similar. 3y

The third book in Panowich‘s series that began with Bull Mountain. Each book follows a different character (rather than new cases of a single detective/main character). I adore this series and Panowich‘s writing is incredibly smart and insightful. #Netgalley #Edelweiss

Deblovestoread Serendipity is reading about a new series that sounds great on Litsy and minutes later seeing the first in the series as a Kindle deal. Today is a good day! 4y
