Rootbound: Rewilding a Life | Alice Vincent
6 posts | 2 read | 6 to read
When she was a girl, Alice Vincent loved her grandfathers garden the freedom, the calm, the beauty of it. Twenty years later, living in a tiny flat in South London, that childhood in the garden feels like a dream. When she suddenly finds herself uprooted, heartbroken, living out of a suitcase and yearning for the comfort of home, Alice starts to plant seeds. She nurtures pot plants and vines on windowsills and draining boards, filling her new space with green, and with each unfurling petal and budding leaf, she begins to come back to life. Mixing memoir, botanical history and biography, Rootbound examines how bringing a little bit of the outside in can help us find our feet in a world spinning far too fast.

The Atlanta Botanical Garden has started letting members in at 8 am before the garden is open to the public. Such a lovely way to start the day and the perfect place to start this book!

The background is the Bog Garden and is probably my favorite spot.

“Most of them were single and wildly accommodating, easy with laughter and generous in spirit”

❤️ this description of her friends.

Loved this book; a kind of memoir, botanical history and plant guide all in one. The author (in her twenties) is getting over a break-up with her boyfriend and this is a year‘s diary about how she finds solace in plants and gardens.

There‘s a lot about London parks and gardens as well as Japanese gardens and The High Line in NYC. There‘s detail on plants such as ferns, auriculas & sweet peas.

Loving this book so far... the author reconsiders her life following a relationship breakdown, gaining solace in the world of plants.

It just seems so right for right now; slowing down, rethinking, getting back to basics.

(And I‘m learning a lot about plants and gardening 👍🌷)
