A gift from my husband, this was that kind of delight that comes when you know nothing about where the book is going. I hadn't read reviews, nor even the back cover. I enjoyed more than I'd expected the thoughts and observations of an author quite unlike me. The writing is vivid and poetic. The deepening of a cross-cultural friendship is slow and... grateful. I really enjoyed this book.

When Otani smiled, he grinned so broadly his eyes disappeared into his cheeks.

Good info that makes you want to chuck yours and your kids' devices in the bin and head to the hills. I'm in the transition generation where I grew up free range roaming the woods while also experiencing the joys of technology, but I can say the loss of quiet wilderness is having a deeper impact the older I get. I'm glad I drug my own kids out while they were growing up.

CampbellTaraL Audiobook Note: I set this aside originally last year, gave it another go this year and actually finished the audio version, but still did not like the narrator. I'm sure she's fun to listen to with children's fiction, that style of overly acted perky just didn't do it for me with this topic. I recommend the print edition though, for sure. 1mo

I was familiar with the 1996 Mount Everest disaster, but Krakauer‘s personal account is harrowing and will leave a lasting impact. So many little things went wrong on Summit Day, each leading to the catastrophic loss of 8 climbers. Krakauer‘s pain and survivor‘s guilt is clear, and his descriptions of the physical and mental toll high altitude climbers experience are palpable. I literally could not put this book down. 5⭐️ #wintergames2021

It was a rollercoaster! One minute, I admire the character's bravery and tenacity, next I get so worked up with his stubbornness. A true display of real human life.

I remember seeing the movie Everest years ago so I was familiar with the tragedy covered in this story but it was very interesting to read an account of the actual experience. How anyone can desire to put themselves through what it takes to reach the summit of Everest is beyond me. This story had some slow parts but once the ascent to the top starts the story really picks up with every heart breaking detail of what happened on that fateful day.
