So may thoughts about this book.Its set in a fantasy world but is more of a coming of age story.The fantasy world created is just so beautiful,the characters are relatable and pure but its the writing that makes this a wonderful wonderful book!!!
Its best read under a cozy blanket and a cup of hot chocolate, you will have a smile on your face the entire time!!!

This is such an intelligently written book, I am in complete awe. It uses real characters and actions to illustrate profound meaning to life. For eg, it has a character called the Keeper of the Hours whose job is to maintain a clock tower, and Cartwright uses it to symbolise time lost and time recovered.
MIND BLOWING!!!

The pic is another example of how beautiful the writing is!!!

The story starts with our protagonist being born. She was born to a whore [sic] in a whorehouse [sic] and was raised in secret so as not to scare the customers away. Although Marea is the daughter of a prostitute she gets a proper education, which eventually leads her to leave her home seeking adventure.

All in all, a good debut novel, but nothing outstanding - except for the cover, the cover drew me in.

julesG Unfortunately a few things bugged me. First of all, why all the similes? They were good, individually, the writing was good, but there were just so many similes that it bogged down the writing. 5y

julesG Then, why was Marea's name not used more often? It was mentioned at the beginning and then it appears again in the second half of the book.
I'm getting old, my memory is not what it used to be... 5y

julesG Why can birds talk in the human language? It would have made a lot more sense the other way round, humans “speaking“ the language of the birds. 5y

TheAromaofBooks I've been mislead by some cover/blurb combos lately. I'm not sure if the people in charge of covers have no idea what the book is about, or if they are just putting things on there that they think will make people buy the book?? I've read two that were billed as lighthearted romcom but were actually pretty serious novels & one with a cover of a couple getting married on the beach... even though no one gets married OR goes to the beach! 5y
