Wanderers
Wanderers: A History of Women Walking | Kerri Andrews
8 posts | 2 read | 20 to read
This is a book about ten women over the past three hundred years who have found walking essential to their sense of themselves, as people and as writers. Wanderers traces their footsteps, from eighteenth-century parson's daughter Elizabeth Carter--who desired nothing more than to be taken for a vagabond in the wilds of southern England--to modern walker-writers such as Nan Shepherd and Cheryl Strayed. For each, walking was integral, whether it was rambling for miles across the Highlands, like Sarah Stoddart Hazlitt, or pacing novels into being, as Virginia Woolf did around Bloomsbury. Offering a beguiling view of the history of walking, Wanderers guides us through the different ways of seeing--of being--articulated by these ten pathfinding women.

Written with warmth & an understated passion, this is a thoroughly fascinating & engaging read. It's incredibly well researched - the author speaks of not only walking the same routes but trying to evoke & replicate the exact emotions as the original walker! The sections on each woman/walker/writer are given depth by the author's analysis of their purpose for walking - as an act of creation, defiance, escapism, self-affirmation, or ⬇️⬇️⬇️

readingjedi From above: ...simply for the joy of using her body in nature. This book makes clear how important walking was for these women & how & why it formed an intrinsic part of their sense of self. 2mo

Mehso-so

This was #moremehthanyeah! Mainly focuses on women walkers/writers in the UK (in fact only 2 chapters are based abroad), and hasn't really encouraged me to seek out some of their work. I might look up Anais Nin and Linda Cracknell.

AllDebooks I really like the sound of this but disappointing that it's not global. Maybe she'll do a sequel 1y
jenniferw88 @AllDebooks The problem is that there's LOTS of books about male authors/walkers throughout history, but hardly any on women, because the information just isn't available/there. Misogyny (I think? - brain isn't in gear at the moment!) - at work again 😡 1y
Cinfhen Such a great idea for #TitlesAndTunes too bad it wasn‘t a winner 😕 1y

Cortg I love walking, hiking & backpacking. I may pick this one up out of curiosity. 😊 1y
BarbaraBB Anais Nin is an interesting person but I am not sure what‘s she‘s got to do with walking? I thought she was always in the salons in Paris 😂 1y
jenniferw88 @BarbaraBB she does a lot of walking, either alone or with a lover, in Paris (& to a lesser extent, New York) to help her with the writing. 1y
BarbaraBB Ah she walks in Paris, that makes sense. I thought in England! 1y

I went with 'world' - and this book covers (many?) different countries! The song logically followed, and apologies for the earworm (as I have it stuck in my head now!) 🤣🤣🤣

Cinfhen Sooooooogood! Now I have that sung stuck in a loop 😂😂😂😂 1y
Cinfhen Book sounds fascinating 😁 1y
JamieArc When I was walking the Camino de Santiago (500 miles), I would hear this song in pubs, so it gives me good memories 😊. Great pairing! 1y

I‘m terrible at making stacks and reading plans that extend beyond the book I‘m reading plus one more! But here‘s what I might choose from for #nfn2020!
