This isn‘t the kind of book I‘d ordinarily choose for myself, but I do like a story that makes you root for the underdog. There are some great themes addressed that center around self-acceptance and standing up to bullies. I applaud any author that tackles these themes, but I think there are other books out there that deliver these messages in a more powerful way.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS BOOK! It was my #1 read of 2020 and there are so many reasons why. The writing was fun, the characters and world so fleshed out. There is also LGBTQ+ rep, bullying, family pressure, racism...just so many topics I didn‘t think would be able to make sense in one book! Just pick this book up! It needs to be in everyone‘s shelves and handed down to others!
DNF - I put this one down before page 50. Here is a quote from the book: “Personally, I consider those stereotypes a singular and offensive lack of imagination...” This was said twice in those first 50 pages, but look at the COVER! How is that not a stereotype?! And there were at least two other stereotypes in that first part of the book as well. There were other reasons I put it down, but this is the main one. #onceuponabookclub
Oh my, I am on such a good reading streak. This book about estranged friends teaming up for a beauty pageant, and all the struggles of not fitting in in a small town and how to hang on to those who always stick by you.
Content note: bullying, homophobia
