Not the right book, will add when I get home but it was a short read about a Hanukkah baby. The texture of the book is really weird but if it really is indestructible then it's a really good format for babies! #tmskellington #wintergames

@Ijuliel Q. what's the diff bt comics, manga, anime, graphic novels, etc

6/6: At their core tho, they're all the same thing. they're stories in graphic format. most use text but there are a few that don't. some come in color, some don't. some are only in print, some in both, and others only online. each country has their own styles and i think that's where the biggest difference lies. Even with anime and other animation from other countries

ljuliel Very interesting ! Thanks for taking the time to do this. 4y

@Ijuliel Q. what's the diff bt comics, manga, anime, graphic novels, etc

5/6: Then we have webcomics. These look a lot like graphic novels and depending on the country they're from, they are stylized differently. I read a lot of korean webcomics and a few chinese ones. these are usually in color and come out in episodes. they utilize a lot of white space to create the mood and don't usually get printed versions

ljuliel So it‘s like tv shows, only done in comic form ? 4y
coffees @ljuliel ok i can't find my glasses so i hope i don't make too many typos. so technically yes but you can say that about any type of comic. i'm guessing you ask bc of the “episodes“. webcomics are usually selfpublished so it's hard for people to dedicate money to them in one go. i think that a way to work around this was to post webcomics on a website and do weekly or biweekly updates on them. so each chapter that is uploaded is called an episode (edited) 4y
coffees @ljuliel nowadays, with an increase in ebooks and webcomics, there's a market for webcomics and you have companies like webtoons, tappytoons, lezhin, and others “publishing“ these webcomics. but the same format stayed of updating them every X-days. ofc this also means they're potentially prone to being discontinued, especially if they aren't picked up by publishing companies and are just on a creator's blog or patreon etc 4y
See All 9 Comments
coffees @Ijuliel in manga you also see this chapter by chapter updates because there are magazines that post individual chapters every month (or so) of all their publications. and once there's enough chapters for a volume for X-series, they get published as their own series of volumes. 4y
coffees @Ijuliel like right now i'm following this series called therapy game but the only way i can read it is if i collect the magazine Dear+, which contains at least a dozen of other single chapters of a dozen series. Once they have some 5-6 chapters, then they will be collected them into the second volume of the series Therapy Game and i can cry as i throw my money at them xD 4y
coffees @Ijuliel ah, with webcomics you purchase individual chapters and not a volume. some webcomics are free but most aren't. sometimes i feel like these are underpriced but i'm not very sure how the behind the scenes financials works so yeah... 4y
ljuliel Wow, you certainly have a lot of knowledge in this area. I‘m glad I tagged you to ask for explanations. I appreciate all the time it took you to do it. 💕 4y
coffees @ljuliel np :) tho a lot of it is observation, I've been reading this stuff for a while xD 4y

@Ijuliel Q. what's the diff bt comics, manga, anime, graphic novels, etc

4/6: Then we get into graphic novels and things get muddy. gns are also comics but i see them as borrowing from both styles. they are usually formatted like comics but start to look like the animanga style. i also read that gns tell a story in one volume but so do manga. and that comics tell it in volumes but so do manga. these are also usually in color and read L to R

LibrarianRyan You had great explanations. I think the only thing I might add is that Graphic novels are similar to comics but allow for a longer story. And/or they compile volumes of comics into one bigger collection. Usually 3-4 comics per graphic novel. 4y
coffees @LibrarianRyan thanks 🙂 oh yeah! comics are usually very short but graphic novels are probably the longest of the group. Manga now comes out in omnibus editions tho which I know a lot of people like 4y
LibrarianRyan @Crimson613 I think for me I only like Manga omnibus editions if they are hard cover. Other wise they fall apart too easy. That being said I have had my eye on a new Death note set all in black with black spayed pages. Tempting!!!! Plus GN are get “book” where the combine the GN in to a book. I like the hard covers but not the price. 4y

coffees @LibrarianRyan for me omnibus books are iffy. If the series is available by volume I get those and if they don't, I get the omnibus. I haven't seen a lot of hardcover ones, are they more expensive than the paperback? Which are expensive already #rip. oh man I love Death Note! Will you get it? I'd also be tempted if I didn't already have the single volumes 4y
LibrarianRyan @Crimson613 death not eventually probably. I used to buy manga for my libraries but it was always hard when books in the middle of series would fall apart and you couldn‘t replace the volume. I own so very little manga because it was hard to get in farm country but I always tried to have the most popular at my library. 4y
ljuliel Wow, such a lot of differences between them ! You did a great job. 4y
LibrarianRyan Btw do you know @Easytiger @GrilledCheeseSamurai and and and it‘s on the tip of my tongue who also appreciate Gn and anime? @GondorGirl likes Gn and I‘m doing her challenge this year. 4y
coffees @ljuliel thanks 😆 4y
coffees @LibrarianRyan Ohhh I don't know too many people so I'm always up for litsy ppl recs, what's the challenge? 4y
LibrarianRyan @Crimson613 it was simple. Two graphic novels a month. I‘m also oldoing the #litsyAtoZ challenge with all graphic novels. I have a few letters I have to find. I started looking today. 4y
coffees @LibrarianRyan if they do it again next year I think I'll join, I'm doing #nfnov and a winter reading challenge in December so I'll be too busy to do something else, but I've always been curious about the A to Z challenge 4y
LibrarianRyan @Crimson613 they are pretty fun. Usually hosted by @BookishMarginalia and @WanderingBookaneer normally you set how you will make your alphabet. I‘m doing picture books and gN 4y

@Ijuliel Q. what's the diff bt comics, manga, anime, graphic novels, etc

3/6: Manga are japanese comics and are printed and read R to L. in these, the panels aren't typically boxed in (more dynamic). you'll often see the pg broken up into sections that obviously read in sequence and some that break the mold. they're printed in B&W with color pgs being specials. they can span single + multiple vols, multiple 'seasons', and a variety of content

ljuliel Now these might confuse me if you have to read them backwards. Do you also start at the back of the book and go to the front ? 4y
coffees @ljuliel Yup! A lot of manga used to have a page that said you were reading it wrong and how to read it but I don't think they have them as much anymore. I think bc they've become more mainstream. It takes a bit of getting used to but definitely recommend checking one out :D 4y
ljuliel We have so many more choices of reading material now ! 4y

@Ijuliel Q. what's the diff bt comics, manga, anime, graphic novels, etc

2/6: I always think of comics to mean anything marvel and DC and “American“ in style. When I say American I'm also thinking 'back in the day'. Nowadays the styles are more diverse. But anything that looks to imitate how real people look I dub as comics. Panels are also styled in boxes and are read L to R

I don't read comics bc I don't like this style

ljuliel See, these I‘d be familiar with. As a kid, they had comics in the drugstore downtown. I probably couldn‘t see the print to read them now , but I used to like them. Archie and Jughead was my favorite. 😁. 4y
coffees @ljuliel i used to work at a library so those titles are familiar but i never read comics like these until i was maybe in college and that's only because i played this game called The Wolf Among Us. I didn't really like the comic (Fables) bc of the art and format which sucks bc the game made it out to be a really cool story! 4y

@Ijuliel Q. what's the diff bt comics, manga, anime, graphic novels, etc

1/6: Oh, that's a tough one. I feel like there are a lot of answers. Let's see. So anime just means animation but everyone outside of Japan dubbed anime to mean animation *from* japan. If you look at the history of anime tho earlier content was inspired by disney + superheros from the US. anime comes in a variety of styles and content - for kids, teens, adults, everyone!

ljuliel That‘s interesting. I didn‘t know that Disney stuff would have also been called anime ! You‘ve been a great help. 4y
coffees @ljuliel Disney stuff wasn't called anime but in japan, some of the early animators imitated a lot of Disney content. if you look at anime from the early 1900s you'll notice the similarities :) and I'm glad 😆 4y
