From Academy Award-winning writer, actor, and activist in the LGBTQ community comes a groundbreaking story about love, prejudice, and being yourself. Phoebes life in Neptune, New Jersey, is somewhat unremarkable. She helps her mom out with her hair salon, she goes to school, and she envies her perfect older sister. But everything changes when Leonard arrives. Leonard is an orphan, a cousin who Phoebe never knew she had. When he comes to live with Phoebes family, he upsets the delicate balance of their lives. Hes gay and confident about who he is. He inspires the people around him. He sees people not as they are, but as they hope to be. One day, Leonard goes missing. Phoebe, her family, and her community fight to understand what happened, and to make sense of why someone might want to extinguish the beautiful absolute brightness that was Leonard Pelkey. This novel by James Lecesne, the cofounder of The Trevor Project, inspired the critically-acclaimed Off-Broadway show The Absolute Brightness of Leonard Pelkey. A William C. Morris Debut Award Finalist This book will encourage you to be exactly who you are. Eve Ensler, author of The Vagina Monologues This complex, illuminating and beautiful book reminds us we have to look for the light even in the darkest corners. Brian Selznick, author of The Invention of Hugo Cabret

I just sent a suggestion to our Litsy creators that the colour of the app background be changed. The brightness of the white background often gives me a headache. A softer colour would be a nicer background and not as hurtful to the eyes.

saguarosally Not a bad idea. Thankfully this background is generally okay but bright whites can be hard on the eyes. 7y
ValerieAndBooks Hmmm....Would it help if you adjusted the brightness setting on your phone or whatever device you're using? 7y
quirkyreader @ValerieAndBooks I use the lowest possible setting on my tablet. Any lower it would be full dark. 7y
ValerieAndBooks Our eyes work in different ways, it seems. For me I need a brighter screen and a bigger font. I wish more devices and/or apps offered customizable backgrounds beyond brightness settings 😊. 7y

Mehso-so

Nice story, too many subplots. I will admit I couldn't put it down, but I also skimmed over paragraphs of detail and dialogue that didn't move the plot along. The story could have been half as long, and probably better had it been. I would be careful to recommend the book to younger YA readers because the subject matter is definitely mature--homophobia. It is however, a very realistic coming of age story for the narrator and protagonist, Phoebe.

I stopped for some book buying therapy after a long week and am stuck sitting in the parking lot in a hail storm. Completely out of nowhere. Awesome.

StaceyKondla Hope you had a book with you while you waited the storm out... 8y
Suzze What fun.....only if you had a book. 8y
MrBook 😂👍🏻 @StaceyKondla . Hail storms are horrible. Hope you made it through your travels unscathed and returned richer. 8y
