Laughing Gas
Laughing Gas | P.G. Wodehouse
3 posts | 5 read
A P.G. Wodehouse novel Joey Cooley is a golden-curled child film star, the idol of American motherhood. Reginald, Third Earl of Havershot, is a boxing blue on a mission to save his wayward cousin from the fleshpots of Hollywood. Both are under anaesthetic at the dentists when something strange happens - and their identities are swapped in the ether. Suddenly Joey can use his six-foot frame to get his own back on his Hollywood persecutors. But Reggie has to endure everything Joey had to put up with in the horrible life of a child star - including kidnap. Laughing Gas is Wodehouse's brilliantly funny take on the 'If I were you' theme - a wry look at the dangers of getting what you wish for in the movie business and beyond.

Pickpick

This was a wonderful read. I love Wodehouse anyway, but this book is a bit special. It is set in the Hollywood of the 1930's and it is a Wodehouse take on the body swap trope. It is interesting and clever and very, very funny.

charl08 Love that orange penguin cover. 8y

Help my Litsy friends. I have books that threw the years ended up on the shelves instead of the TBR pile even though they had not been read. My friend Amanda is challenging me to read them!!! Do I accept??? Do I continue to ignore them for my TBR pile???

Sue There is some awesome stuff in that pile - I say read them! (Can you intersperse them through your TBR?) 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I'm with @Sue, read them, but read one, the. continue with your current TBR pile for a bit, then pick up another one this fall, etc 8y
ReadingOver50 Yes, do try 😄 8y

SoniaC @Sue I'm thinking at least one a month. Then I still get to knock out my other TBR books too. 8y
SoniaC @Riveted_Reader_Melissa that's a plan I can handle. Some of these I can't even remember how I got them. 8y
SoniaC @ReadingOver50 I'm going too! It will be good the stretch myself. 8y
MrBook *dramatic cinematic music* *cue the Liam Neeson voice* You would never live it down. The shame you would bring down upon your house--your family: unforgivable. You will forever question your every action, your every thought. Your regret will destroy you. *loud air intake sound* Do it! *end credits* 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @MrBook 👏👏👏👏👍 8y
SoniaC @MrBook well if you put it like that I guess reading them is the only option 😂 now to decide which one first. 8y
BookBabe One a month sounds like a solid plan. I want to read The Feminine Mystique myself — it was mentioned in a book I read that takes place in the 1950s. 8y
SoniaC @BookBabe it's sad at my age I haven't read it. Thinking that's where I will begin. 8y
Sue @SoniaC Yay!! (Wodehouse might be a good place to start). @MrBook Well said sir. 8y
MrBook *bows to the left* Thank you. *bows to the right* Thank you. *bows to the center* Thank you. 😊 8y
BookBabe @MrBook 😂😂😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 8y
SoniaC Litsy is so much fun. Such great people! 8y
MrBook Indubitably! 😊 8y
moranadatter Go for it! One a month sounds like a good plan. Don't feel obligated to finish them if they aren't working for you. 8y
SoniaC @kmdartist thanks. I'm going to give it a try. 8y
moranadatter @SoniaC Good luck! 8y
