La La Fine relates to animals better than she does to other people. Abandoned by a mother who never wanted a family, raised by a locksmith-turned-thief father, La La looks to pets when it feels like the rest of the world conspires against her. La Las world stops being whole when her mother, who never wanted a child, abandons her twice. First, when La La falls through thin ice on a skating trip, and again when the accusations of unfit mother feel too close to true. Left alone with her fathera locksmith by trade, and a thief in realityLa La is denied a regular life. She becomes her fathers accomplice, calming the watchdog while he strips families of their most precious belongings. When her fathers luck runs out and he is arrested for burglary, everything La La has painstakingly built unravels. In her fourth year of veterinary school, she is forced to drop out, leaving school to pay for her fathers legal fees the only way she knows howrobbing homes once again. As an animal empath, she rationalizes her theft by focusing on houses with pets whose maladies only she can sense and caring for them before leaving with the familys valuables. The news reports a puzzled police forcesearching for a thief who left medicine for the dog, water for the parrot, or food for the hamster behind. Desperate to compensate for new and old losses, La La continues to rob homes even after her father flees custody. But its a strategy that ultimately will fail her. Other Peoples Pets examines the gap between the families were born into and those we create, and the danger that holding on to a troubled past may rob us of the future.

Mehso-so

A young woman vet student who is a burglar and an empath with animals ( except the humankind ) makes a long journey towards adulthood. Her father thieves to pay her tuition; her mother abandoned her as a child; and her backstory is too much for the boyfriend. This novel allows the chips to fall as they do in real life- with clatter and chaos and uncertainty.
This is an unusual story, brightly told, but a tad shallow.

Bailedbailed

After five decades of reading I believe I have bailed on only 10 books. While I cannot say that this was a horrible book since I didn‘t finish it I can‘t say that I could never get to the point where I trust that what it had to say would matter. No patience left for mediocrity.

GREAT novel! Raised by her burglar father, La La, who is one year shy of graduating from veterinary school, starts robbing houses in order to pay off her father's legal fees. But she only robs the houses of people who aren't properly taking care of their pets, and she gives those pets veterinary treatment while she's in there.

Held this review for #caturday because it‘s a perfect book for animal lovers. Maizes balances themes like loneliness, abandonment, and obligation with endearing characters and the pets factor. MC La La (short for Louise) is an animal empath / veterinary student whose dad gets arrested at work because he‘s a burglar. It‘s a feel-good novel that‘s never schmaltzy.

This one drops on 14 July, so I‘m anxious to read and help promote it. So far, I‘m charmed by the story and main character. Plus, I loved the author‘s short story collection last year, so I have a feeling this will be a win for me. 🤞🏻
