Somehow, he keeps us desperate to follow the fates of these tragic, awful people.

Meh... his earlier works are so much better.

Just fine she's reading The Invention of Sound by Chuck Palahniuk. My first book by this author and I enjoyed it, fair amount of twists. Fun quick read.

I'm always hopeful that a new Palahniuk will give me all those wonderful vibes I felt reading his early stuff, but I usually end up disappointed.

This book is weird, which I expect from him, but it just felt too forced to make a story of a man looking for his missing child and a woman who records screams for a living come together. It just felt too disjointed for me.

When a new Chuck Palahniuk book comes out I always want to give it a chance ... but deep down I know he hasn't written a good book since 2007 🥲

Everyone wanted to have an effect. People spent their lives trying to get a laugh. Or to seduce an audience of strangers. The goal was to commodity something, repeat it, sell them, these most intimate of human drives. It meant turning people's basic humanity into something that could be bought and sold. From fast food to porn, this was power.

Having been a big Palahniuk fan and still owning most of his books, it's been years since I've read anything of his and I've missed several of his latest releases. Even though it would have been a while till I got to this, I regret getting the audio. The narrator's voice was a little too polished for the story/content. There was no chapter breaks, and the perspective sometimes seemed to change in the same breath. It made the twists hard to follow.

I hate to post two middling reviews of one of my favorite authors back to back, but he is capable of so much better. This story follows a man searching for his long missing daughter and a sound engineer who provides Hollywood with the screams that pepper our entertainment. This is not bad at all, it is much better than many other authors could do, but far from Palahniuk‘s best.

This is a good book, but not Palahniuk‘s finest work. I was a little let down by how bland the finale 3rd part of the book was compared to how he normally sums up his novels. But the topic was still very much his own version of outlandishly horrific reality with a touch of exaggeration, and beautiful characters plot lines that intermix and connect for the finale put come. Definitely worth reading, but also check out some other works by him too.

This book is so weird. But so good. I have no idea how this author comes up with his stories but they are definitely unique.

A man is still searching for his daughter who went missing years ago. A woman is a Foley artist in search of the perfect scream. So they're both looking for something rather elusive when their paths cross.
