Saxon barbarians threaten to destroy medieval Wales. Lady Branwen becomes Wales' last hope to unite their divided kingdoms when her father betroths her to a powerful Welsh warlord, the Hammer King. But the fledgling alliance is fraught with enemies from within and without as Branwen becomes the target of assassination attempts and courtly intrigue. A young woman in a world of fierce warriors, she seeks to assert her own authority and preserve Wales against the barbarians. But when she falls for a young hedge knight named Artagan, her world threatens to tear itself apart. Caught between her duty to her people and her love of a man she cannot have, Branwen must choose whether to preserve her royal marriage or to follow her heart. Somehow she must save her people and remain true to herself, before Saxon invaders and a mysterious traitor try to destroy her.Branwen's story combines elements of mystery and romance with Noce's gift for storytelling.

Interesting...this is the definition of historical fiction. There's no fantasy element what so ever (which was actually quite refreshing for me today). I liked that the mc grew with her experiences and understood how things were escalading and adapted accordingly. It felt like such a long book with everything that covered but it's actually quite small! MC romance was sweet.

Mehso-so

The best part about this book was the medieval Wales setting; otherwise, it was just your average historical read.

Enjoyed this immensely. A very accessible and captivating work of Anglo-Saxon historical fiction. I didn't want to put it down! It's the tale of a strong woman in a world of men, amid a brutal time of constant warfare. The publisher compares it to GoT, but I disagree, mainly because it is not graphic. The #galley I read didn't include a historical note. Hopefully one is included in the finished book-that would be my one qualm. #betweentwofires

The_Literary_Jedi If you like Anglo-Saxon historical fiction, try Patricia Bracewell's Emma of Normandy Trilogy. Books 1 & 2 are out now. I read the first, and loved it! 8y
annahenke @The_Literary_Jedi Yes, really liked that one! Have you read this one? Very good. So is Hild by Nicola Griffith. Those are all more history-heavy than this one. Fascinated by this time! 8y

shawnmooney Ok I'm hooked! Do you know about this one, also on my TBR list? 8y
annahenke No, but it's on my TBR now! Thanks! 8y
The_Literary_Jedi I have a copy of The Forever Queen but reading the description, I can't say I remember reading it - all the more reason to break it out. I put The Harrowing on my TBR 😃 8y

SusanInTiburon Just like Hamlet said: "... one may smile, and smile, and be a villain." Who remembers Sir Richard Carlisle quoting that as he swept out of Lady Mary's life? 8y

I'm liking this one so far! Enjoying the writing and finding it very accessible to those not familiar with the history of the time.

Bailedbailed

I commend Mark Noce for diving into medieval Wales however it didn't work for me. The main character lacked in emotion and reflection to her actions and choices.

Everything also felt "clean" and it's all seemed to "work out". I was looking for romance, lust, blood, Royal back stabbing, and within the first half of the book there was little if any plot movement. I felt underwhelmed and disappointed ⭐️⭐️

ARCAugust is officially here! I'm starting it off with Between Two Fires a historical romance (so far) set in the late 500 AD in Europe!

MrBook Interesting time period choice. 8y
NautiGirlReads @MrBook I thought so too! I'm interested to see how it goes! 8y

NautiGirlReads @MrBook It was the cover that drew me to it in the first place! I know "don't judge a book by its cover" but it what you see first! 8y
MrBook Aaaahhh, we all judge books by their covers 😉👍🏻. 8y
