01 The Thieves of Ostia
01 The Thieves of Ostia | Caroline Lawrence
7 posts | 11 read | 2 to read
The first in Caroline Lawrence's internationally bestselling Roman Mysteries series, re-issued with a fantastic new cover look. Flavia Gemina is a natural at solving mysteries. The daughter of a ship's captain living in Ostia, the port of Rome, in AD79, she and her three friends, Jonathan, a Jewish boy (and secretly a Christian); Nubia, an African slave girl; and Lupus, a mute beggar boy, must work together to discover who is beheading the watchdogs that guard people's homes, and why. A talented storyteller, Caroline Lawrence has created a delightfully readable and accessible series that children will want to read time and time again.

Mehso-so

Audio. This is a mix of children‘s lit, historical fiction, and mystery. I listened to the audio, and overall it was ok. I did lose focus (as I seem to with audios more often lately) a few times, but the story was ok. There was a short author‘s/historical note at the end, though being a kids‘ book, it didn‘t go into detail. Even with only an “ok” rating from me, it might still be a fun series to continue

Pickpick

I‘ve never heard of this series before but received this from @jenniferw88 as part of a swap. I love middle grade mysteries and this didn‘t disappoint. Thus would be a great learning tool for any young students learning about Ancient Rome. A fast paced story involving friendship and loyalty.

jenniferw88 Glad you enjoyed it! 😊 3y

Day 13 @Andrew65 I think I have got 12 more books to read in this series! #20series20days

AlaMich If this series had been around when I was a kid, I would‘ve been in heaven! I was a huge fan of fiction set in ancient Egypt, Rome, wherever. 4y

#childrensbookday #acrossapril @Eggs

If you're at home with children aged 9+ who like ancient history I can recommend this series! There's 17 books in total so plenty of them to last the quarantine.

Eggs Great choice 👏🏻👏🏻 5y

1. Children's version: The Roman Mysteries (tagged is first in series)
Adult: too many to count, but I'll go with the Ben Hope series by Scott Mariani

2. Joining Litsy!

3. Three-way tie! Snape, Baelish & Bellatrix - I think this is due to the actors/actress though! 🤣
