Twilight of the Belle Epoque
Twilight of the Belle Epoque: The Paris of Picasso, Stravinsky, Proust, Renault, Marie Curie, Gertrude Stein, and Their Friends through the Great War | Mary McAuliffe
10 posts | 2 read | 6 to read
Mary McAuliffes Dawn of the Belle Epoque took the reader from the multiple disasters of 18701871 through the extraordinary re-emergence of Paris as the cultural center of the Western world. Now, in Twilight of the Belle Epoque, McAuliffe portrays Paris in full flower at the turn of the twentieth century, where creative dynamos such as Picasso, Matisse, Stravinsky, Debussy, Ravel, Proust, Marie Curie, Gertrude Stein, Jean Cocteau, and Isadora Duncan set their respective circles on fire with a barrage of revolutionary visions and discoveries. Such dramatic breakthroughs were not limited to the arts or sciences, as innovators and entrepreneurs such as Louis Renault, Andr Citron, Paul Poiret, Franois Coty, and so many othersincluding those magnificent men and women in their flying machinesemphatically demonstrated. But all was not well in this world, remembered in hindsight as a golden age, and wrenching struggles between Church and state as well as between haves and have-nots shadowed these years, underscored by the ever-more-ominous drumbeat of the approaching Great Wara cataclysm that would test the mettle of the City of Light, even as it brutally brought the Belle Epoque to its close. Through rich illustrations and evocative narrative, McAuliffe brings this remarkable era from 1900 through World War I to vibrant life.

#12Booksof2020 The 2nd part of Mary Macauliffe's magisterial duology of the Belle Epoque.I love the genre of group biography-innovations in one field always fed into and influenced the others, and it's always fascinating to see how one fed the other, or created an atmosphere that fostered inventions and explorations.Mary Macauliffe makes it look easy, but I wonder how many months of research went into putting together each protagonist's daily life

Vansa And weave it into an all encompassing narrative, including the political circumstances of the time as well. Incredibly good writing. 4y

1. Such a difficult question! The Belle Epoque, The Regency, The inter war years, China during the Cultural Revolution
2. I used to like historical fiction but I've gravitated to non fiction now
3. Always!
One of the most thought provoking prompts!!

BookmarkTavern You‘re the second person to mention la Belle Époque! I‘m definitely going to have to look a couple books now! Thank you for sharing! 5y

Books coming to life! I recently read this book, which I loved. I told my husband to get me out of the house, so we spent the day at the SF MOMA and some of the works of art in the book are displayed there. Matisse is one of my favorite artists. Such a great day! ❤❤❤

Top pic - Braque
Bottom - Matisse

I love this time period all the way through the 1940's. The lives of the artists, composers, writers and entertainers are fascinating, and behind it all Paris. 💗💗💗 That being said this book was pure candy. I have ordered every McAuliffe book based on this one book.

@bookriot #RiotGrams #October Challenge-books connected to #artandillustration. Most of my books are at my parents' house, so these are just a few of the books bought over the last few years. I like using the brochures/tickets of entry to art galleries as bookmarks so the photo also has all my art-related 'bookmarks ', from all the art galleries I've been to!
