Dean is pretty sure he's trans but once he gets cast as Romeo in his school play, acting as a boy every day confirms his suspicions and makes it impossible for him to hide his true self outside of the theatre. Coming out is messy and not what he planned, especially how it affects his relationships with others. This is such an emotionally charged story, beautifully written

I didn‘t love this one, but I just realized it may be because this is where the story starts. We don‘t get to see any of the journey that led him to the realization that he is trans and the reader is dropped into this world where he starts to come out, his girlfriend outs him, and he faces a transphobic bully—all while navigating his Senior year of high school.

Great book! I felt connected to the characters and felt their fears and triumphs. I look back at the first line I posted today and think what a ride it was. Everyone at Dean‘s school thinks he‘s a lesbian, after all he has a girlfriend. But really, Dean‘s a guy. When he gets cast as Romeo in an “unorthodox” production of Romeo and Juliet, he realizes how much he wants to transition. But to do that he needs to come out first. 5⭐️

Loved this coming of age story about a senior in high school grappling with gender identity. Dean has been cast a Romeo in the high school play. What initially was an edgy gender swapped casting gives Dean the space to explore trans masculinity. As a theater kid this brought back memories. As a cis person it was a wonderful insight into someone else‘s experience. The voice artist was perfect this audio book.

I didn‘t come out until well after high school, but so much of what main character Dean went through during his self-discovery process resonated with me. I saw myself in Dean‘s journey and couldn‘t put this book down.

This one releases in April and is well worth a preorder.
