This book gets accolades because it deserves them. It reads like poetry, and looks like love. The illustrations and words together paint a picture of a young, strong, person of color. This book pertains to everyone, but it is not seen enough for young black boys. This is their book, this is their chance to be seen and heard. This is just one of what will hopefully will become many.
Continuing my quest to read all of the picture books that on the GR Choice Awards nominations list, and I think I've found my pick! Author Derrick Barnes and Illustrator Gordon James are a dynamic duo, and this book has it all. Gorgeous illustrations, lyrical verse, this book has an empowering message to young black boys. It's a book of joy, power and positivity, and I LOVED it.
I love this book! I‘ve been doing online storytimes and read alouds for my library, but I couldn‘t be the one to read this one. I asked my son‘s friend who loves performing and I‘m so grateful he said yes.

I love this title with this cover. So many books about Black boys have titles that sound depressing or make you think it's an “issue book“. Maybe this is an issue book, I have no idea. But I love the prominent title proclaiming I AM EVERY GOOD THING.
