"From the small towns of Appalachia they came, the young men who joined the fight for liberty in World War II. Now they are elderly, and some of them--like Harmon Strayer, father of prosecutor Bell Elkins's former law school classmate--suffer from Alzheimer's. When Harmon dies in an Alzheimer's care facility from what appear to be natural causes, Bell confronts a mystery that brims with questions about memory, grief and the lethal cost of burying the past. During a winter of record snow and cold, Bell and the people of Acker's Gap, West Virginia, face isolation and hardship--and the threat from a killer who preys upon the old and the sick and the helpless"--

I love when they put pictures in a book. Makes my vision of them more realistic.

So many books, so little time! I think for every book I read, I'm adding at least 3 to my TBR thanks to @Litsy and everyone's recommendations. #augustwrapup @TheSpinecrackersBookClub

One of the reasons I love these books are the insights Keller has about the current state of affairs in small West Virginia towns (and the rest of Appalachia). I enjoyed the mystery, while I was also highlighting passages like this one.

[DELETED] 2232195534 So, so true! This is a wonderful mystery series. So much emotion and the setting and way of life are integral to the whole overarching storyline. Love Bell Elkins and think Julia Keller has done an excellent job!! ❤️ 8y

Excited to start the newest installment of one of my favorite mystery series. Bell Elkins is a great heroine - smart, tough, and compassionate. Can't wait to see where this story takes her!

WV native Julia Keller will be at the WV Book Festival in October. It's always a plus to be able to do something "bookish" when I visit my sister! I'm looking forward to the new Bell Elkins book and meeting Julia Keller! The rest of the lineup is pretty good, too!

BlogginBoutBooks Fun! I love the Bell Elkins series. 8y
