I love when they put pictures in a book. Makes my vision of them more realistic.

Started this one on Memorial Day and as it turns out it is about four young men and the military. 🇺🇸♥️🇺🇸♥️🇺🇸
On this #tradepaperbackthursday, travel to Acker's Gap, West Virginia for two stories—one set in the turbulent era of WWII and one in present day.

I can add this to my August wrap-up. Didn't think I'd finish, but like the others in the series I couldn't put it down. Keller's writing about WV - even though most of the place names are made up which bugs me - and the state's people and problems is beautiful and brutally honest.
"Yet the very things that made that land beautiful were also the things that doomed those same people to poverty and despair. These mountains protected you, but they also isolated you."

So many books, so little time! I think for every book I read, I'm adding at least 3 to my TBR thanks to @Litsy and everyone's recommendations. #augustwrapup @TheSpinecrackersBookClub

"It was a town that did not matter, in a county nobody cared about, in a state that people overlooked except when they were making jokes about it."
That was like a punch in the gut, Julia Keller. Truth hurts. #wvgirl
How is it already August 30th?! In addition to this stack, the most books I've purchased outside of my library's sale (thanks, Litsy), I've got books on my kindle and the latest in Julia Keller's Bell Elkins series became available yesterday. A good haul. #augustphotochallenge
One of the reasons I love these books are the insights Keller has about the current state of affairs in small West Virginia towns (and the rest of Appalachia). I enjoyed the mystery, while I was also highlighting passages like this one.
Excited to start the newest installment of one of my favorite mystery series. Bell Elkins is a great heroine - smart, tough, and compassionate. Can't wait to see where this story takes her!
WV native Julia Keller will be at the WV Book Festival in October. It's always a plus to be able to do something "bookish" when I visit my sister! I'm looking forward to the new Bell Elkins book and meeting Julia Keller! The rest of the lineup is pretty good, too!
