Sorrow Road: A Novel | Julia Keller

"From the small towns of Appalachia they came, the young men who joined the fight for liberty in World War II. Now they are elderly, and some of them--like Harmon Strayer, father of prosecutor Bell Elkins's former law school classmate--suffer from Alzheimer's. When Harmon dies in an Alzheimer's care facility from what appear to be natural causes, Bell confronts a mystery that brims with questions about memory, grief and the lethal cost of burying the past. During a winter of record snow and cold, Bell and the people of Acker's Gap, West Virginia, face isolation and hardship--and the threat from a killer who preys upon the old and the sick and the helpless"--

I love when they put pictures in a book. Makes my vision of them more realistic.

I can add this to my August wrap-up. Didn't think I'd finish, but like the others in the series I couldn't put it down. Keller's writing about WV - even though most of the place names are made up which bugs me - and the state's people and problems is beautiful and brutally honest.

[DELETED] 2232195534 I loved this one too! 8y

So many books, so little time! I think for every book I read, I'm adding at least 3 to my TBR thanks to @Litsy and everyone's recommendations. #augustwrapup @TheSpinecrackersBookClub

"It was a town that did not matter, in a county nobody cared about, in a state that people overlooked except when they were making jokes about it."

That was like a punch in the gut, Julia Keller. Truth hurts. #wvgirl

brendanmleonard I'm from Ohio, so I know the feeling. Looks like a great read. 8y
MMenefee @brendanmleonard I guess a lot of folks feel that way. This is the fifth in a very good series. 8y
CallMeIshmael I grew up in deep Hollar in no where WV and graduated high school with 23 people 8y

MMenefee @CallMeIshmael That's a small class, even in WV. 8y
[DELETED] 2232195534 I love this series! Such a vivid setting, almost another character. Highly recommended!! 8y
LindaGrace812 How have I never heard of this series?! 8y
LindaGrace812 By the way, I grew up in central Illinois in village of 950 souls - no fast food, no stoplight, not even a flashing red or yellow light. My hs class had 70 people in it but that's only because four teeny towns funneled into the same hs. I know from overlooked and underestimated. 8y
Cinfhen @kaysreadinglife wait, it's a series??? Is this book one? How many are in the series??? 8y
[DELETED] 2232195534 @Cinfhen Yes, this is book 5. The first is A Killing In The Hills. Love it! 8y
Cinfhen @kaysreadinglife thanks, gonna check it out😊 8y

How is it already August 30th?! In addition to this stack, the most books I've purchased outside of my library's sale (thanks, Litsy), I've got books on my kindle and the latest in Julia Keller's Bell Elkins series became available yesterday. A good haul. #augustphotochallenge

[DELETED] 2232195534 Sorrow Road was very good, for me anyway. Love that series! Enjoy! 8y

One of the reasons I love these books are the insights Keller has about the current state of affairs in small West Virginia towns (and the rest of Appalachia). I enjoyed the mystery, while I was also highlighting passages like this one.

[DELETED] 2232195534 So, so true! This is a wonderful mystery series. So much emotion and the setting and way of life are integral to the whole overarching storyline. Love Bell Elkins and think Julia Keller has done an excellent job!! ❤️ 8y

Excited to start the newest installment of one of my favorite mystery series. Bell Elkins is a great heroine - smart, tough, and compassionate. Can't wait to see where this story takes her!

[DELETED] 2232195534 I've read this one and liked it very much! Thanks for introducing me to this series!!! 8y

WV native Julia Keller will be at the WV Book Festival in October. It's always a plus to be able to do something "bookish" when I visit my sister! I'm looking forward to the new Bell Elkins book and meeting Julia Keller! The rest of the lineup is pretty good, too!

BlogginBoutBooks Fun! I love the Bell Elkins series. 8y
