VB6: Eat Vegan Before 6:00 to Lose Weight and Restore Your Health . . . for Good | Mark Bittman
2 posts | 8 read | 2 to read
I live full-time in the world of omnivores, and Ive never wanted to leave. But the Standard American Diet (yes, its SAD) got to me as it gets to almost everyone in this country. Six years ago, an overweight, pre-diabetic Mark Bittman faced a medical directive: adopt a vegan diet or go on medication. He was no fan of a lifelong regimen of pills, but as a food writer he livedand workedto eat. So neither choice was appealing. His solution was a deal with himself. He would become a flexitarian. He adopted a diet heavy in vegetables, fruits, and grains by following a healthy vegan diet (no meat, dairy, or processed foods) all day. After 6:00 p.m. hed eat however he wanted, though mostly in moderation. Beyond that, his plan involved no gimmicks, scales, calorie counting, or point systems. And there were no so-called forbidden foodshe ate mostly home-cooked meals that were as varied and satisfying as they were delicious, but he dealt with the realities of the office and travel and life on the run as best he could. He called this plan Vegan Before 6:00 (VB6 for short), and the results were swift and impressive. Best of all, they proved to be lasting and sustainable over the long haul. Bittman lost 35 pounds and saw all of his blood numbers move in the right direction. Using extensive scientific evidence to support his plan, the acclaimed cookbook author and food policy columnist shows why his VB6 approach succeeds when so many other regimens not only fail, but can actually lead to unwanted weight gain. He then provides all the necessary tools for making the switch to a flexitarian diet: lists for stocking the pantry, strategies for eating away from home in a variety of situations, pointers for making cooking on a daily basis both convenient and enjoyable, and a complete 28-day eating plan showing VB6 in action. Finally, Bittman provides more than 60 recipes for vegan breakfasts, lunches, and snacks, as well as non-vegan dinners that embrace the spirit of a vegetable- and grain-forward diet. If youre one of the millions who have thought of trying a vegan diet but fear its too monotonous or unfamiliar, or simply dont want to give up the foods you love to eat, VB6 will introduce a new, flexible, and quite simply better way of eating you can really live with . . . for life. From the Hardcover edition.

EEEEEEEEEK! Book mail!!!!! Litsy is so dangerous. I have a community of enablers. Book outlet, ThriftBooks, Book Depository, OverDrive, and the public library are my frequent spots, thanks to you! Yaaay! I can justify this purchase in that there's SOME non-fiction and I've promised to read more non-fiction. (I have a box of trashy romance novels on the way, too! )

JanuarieTimewalker13 Hahahaha! "A community of enablers" love it! 8y
ScientistSam Ooh, Richelle Mead! 8y
Mariposa_Bookworm @JanuarieTimewalker13 hee hee! I wouldn't have it any other way! 8y

Mariposa_Bookworm @ScientistSam I've never read her before, but I've seen a few of my kids with her books. Is this a series you'd recommend? 8y
ScientistSam I like this series. (I like most things Richelle Mead writes!) It's a spin-off of the Vampire Academy series but stands alone. I think her world-building for these two series is great. 8y
Mariposa_Bookworm @ScientistSam Great! I have not read Vampire Academy but one of my girls in 2nd period is. I honestly chose these because they were on sale and I liked the covers. I can't wait to dig in! 8y
azulaco I'm interested in that Mark Bittman book. I'd love to see his take on vegan. I'm not vegan myself due to food allergies, but I bet he has some good ideas. 8y
Mariposa_Bookworm @azulaco I have a thyroid disease which has made my metabolism quite sluggish. Add to that teaching and working a part-time, I need to make healthier food choices. 8y
Literaryunicorn Litsy IS dangerous. My TBR is truly out of hand 8y
CrowCAH ❤️The Bloodlines series, by Richelle Mead!!! 8y
Gissy 🙋🏻Yes, I'm part of that madness! But I love it! 📚📚📚😍Last Wednesday I bought 4 books and two arrived. Yesterday I bought four more and my wishing list is enormous. Every time I read all of your comments, the list continue growing. But I am so happy since I'm in Litsy! Thank you ❤👌🏼 8y

Day3 #booktober #textonlycovers There are a few but not many covers with just text on my shelves. Although I tend to like great cover art, there is appeal to how just font, placement and color can capture the feel of a book. #photochallenge
