One of the most depressing and enlightening books I've ever picked up. Tough to read, and the stories of people struggling really stay with you. Made me grateful and angry at the same time. A must-read for all Americans wondering what happened to the American Dream.

RanaElizabeth I loved this book, one of the best discussions for our book club! 7y
peaKnit Milwaukee is almost in my backyard, it was really enlightening. I had no idea about the housing situation. 7y
lyssamez This book was amazing. So poignant. I agree that it should be required reading. 7y

Finally finished this after several attempts. It is SO incredibly dense. I feel like entire wars are fought and lives are lived on one or two pages. Glad I finally conquered it. Beautiful overall story - just.... whew.

monalyisha I read it in college (with a very adept & passionate professor) and loved it. I think that's the way to do it, though -- with an intellectual support group & regular discussion. Congrats for braving it on your own! 7y
monalyisha P.S. Gabriel Garcia-Marquez is my bunny's favorite author. (Of all the books in my house that are readily accessible to her, his are the only titles she's nibbled! She has very refined taste. 🐰🥕📚) 7y
Laalaleighh @monalyisha I'm sorry I just caught this comment as I was scrolling and 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I love the idea of her skipping over all the less erudite reads to get to the Garcia-Marquez for her light snack. 7y

Loved this book so much!! Can't believe it took me so long to get around to it. It officially got me out of my (slight) reading slump. Three cheers for 80s geekery!

CoffeeK8 This is one of the only books my non-reader husband was willing to read (and loved!) 7y
AmandaV I'm so nervous about the movie they're making. I know Spielberg is doing it but I worry the movie won't do it justice 7y

Just finished this one. I always thought the movie was so intriguing. The book was meh - wondering if I should try any of the sequels? Maybe would have been better if I didn't know what was going to happen?

I'm about 80 pages in on this one and I'm not loving it. I don't really enjoy the interview/diary format and I'm kind of bored. Should I stick with it? Does it get better?

emtobiasz This one was mostly ok for me-- wasn't a fan of the writing style. If the interview format bothers you, it's not going to get any better on that front. 7y
EmilyChristine Maybe listening to it would help? I loved it but it does have a different format. 7y
Skeebies05 I loved this one. But I was hooked 10 pages in. If you're still bored at 80 it may be a lost cause 😳 7y
See All 10 Comments
mcipher I'm not always a fan of that style but it worked for me in these books. I loved both but they did take me a while to read. 7y
Literaryunicorn @EmilyChristine That's a really good point. I think @Skeebies05 is right - I usually give something 50 pages to hook me and I think it's time to give up the ghost on this one. I might try audio version later. Thanks for the advice and thoughts! 7y
Mc_cart_ny Aw, that's too bad. I loved this one, but if you don't like to read epistolary novels then it just might not be your jam. 7y
Megabooks I loved this one too. 7y
Literaryunicorn I'm sad about it too @Mc_cart_ny and @Booksandcooks! I had this on my TBR for quite a while. I also tried to start Borne by Jeff Vandermeer last night and I wasn't into that either. WHAT IF I AM IN A BOOK SLUMP. 😱😱😱😱😱😱 7y

IT CAME! It finally came! 👏👏👏 Trying to savor it though. Side note - who else also hates dust covers that aren't library dust covers?

Amanda23 Love dust covers while my books are on the shelf but they always come off when reading 7y
sherryvdh Yes! I always pull mine off when reading. 7y
underthebelljar I always take them off when I'm reading too. 7y

StephanieMarie Good luck with savoring it! I tried so hard and still ended up finishing it in 2 days 🙂 7y
bates_barb I also hate dust covers. It turned out to be a bit of a problem when I went to make a libib database of all the books I own. The easiest way to enter physical books is by scanning the barcode with your phone. Aboit half of my hardcovers don't have barcodes any more because I lost or threw out the dust covers. 7y
Literaryunicorn @StephanieMarie I have a feeling I'm not going to be able to. @bates_barb I hadn't thought about that! I don't understand why they just don't make the hard cover pretty and leave the dust cover out of it! 7y

This one is on its way to me! I took the plunge and ordered despite my temporary book-buying ban after reading how great the reviews are! (Oops!) I love sci-fi and fantasy and I am super excited to get in the mail! Have you read? Did you ❤️ it? I've never seen a book with so many positive Amazon reviews!!
