Gods, Graves & Scholars
Gods, Graves & Scholars: The Story of Archaeology | C.W. Ceram
6 posts | 7 read | 9 to read
C.W. Ceram visualized archeology as a wonderful combination of high adventure, romance, history and scholarship, and this book, a chronicle of man's search for his past, reads like a dramatic narrative. We travel with Heinrich Schliemann as, defying the ridicule of the learned world, he actually unearths the remains of the ancient city of Troy. We share the excitement of Lord Carnarvon and Howard Carter as they first glimpse the riches of Tutankhamen's tomb, of George Smith when he found the ancient clay tablets that contained the records of the Biblical Flood. We rediscover the ruined splendors of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the wonders of the ancient wold; of Chichen Itza, the abandoned pyramids of the Maya: and the legendary Labyrinth of tile Minotaur in Crete. Here is much of the history of civilization and the stories of the men who rediscovered it. From the Paperback edition.

I've a bookworm-ish exchange this weekend. We went to bring unused sports equipment and got a stack of books instead. All my missing volumes of A Song Of Ice And Fire. But I'm more excited about CW Cerams “Gods, Graves & Scholars“, a book long out of print. It has been on my wishlist for so long and then I spot it in the novel section of our secondhand shop (someone put it on the wrong shelf - THANK YOU!). Sometimes books find their way to you ❤

Jari-chan And yes, I still work out - with my favorite equipment, though 😉 12mo

When I found this book, it sounded familiar. Then I remembered that it was mentioned and highly recommended in the book about the Sky Disc of Nebra I read earlier this year. The authors said, that even though already an older book, it's still worth reading and highly anticipated among archaeologists. I took it home immediately.

And yes, it was such a fascinating read! Ceram writes easy, for the everyday human, not the scientists. Telling us ⬇

Jari-chan funny and exciting stories about the great founds in the history of archeology. About outsiders who were so passionate, nothing could stop them. About people spending years in the desert, digging, and finally being rewarded.

We also learn about the history of all different kind of cultures. Many pictures show us how those people lived and what kind of life they led. Highly recommend. I love this book!

Jumping into #colormepretty belatedly, with #purple and #green (days 1 and 2) in the bottom photo, and #brown (day 3) in the top one. The brown book with a difficult to read spine is a Harvard Classics volume containing Plato, Epictetus, and Marcus Aurelius.

Thanks for the fun idea, @sweetkokoro!

Sweetkokoro Thanks for jumping in and joining the fun! I can‘t wait to see more pictures! 5y

Out of daye, not only in information but also at times in attitude, but still captures some of the wonder and grandeur of archaeology and lost civilisations. Btw, if anyone knows any pop history worth reading on the Hittites or the Etruscans, that's where my curiosity is calling me...

Found this bookmark at Waterstones today, just had to have it!

Reading while keeping an eye on Hulk and Breakfast...

Book's out of date, but still fascinating. #BunniesofLitsy

DivineDiana They have a nice play yard! I used to take our bunny out and watch her roam unfettered. But every now and then, she would spite me and make a quick escape through the fence to the neighbors‘ yard and I would chase after her! 🐰 6y
Clare-Dragonfly Aww, outdoor playtime for buns! ❤️ 6y
shanaqui @DivineDiana Mine have never been outside off-leash before! They love my parents' garden. Ours at the new flat is less lovely but they'll probably still have fun. 6y
DivineDiana I‘m sure they will! 👍🏻 6y
