The Company We Keep
The Company We Keep: A Novel | Frances Itani
8 posts | 7 read | 2 to read
On Tuesday nights in the backroom of Cassies caf, six strangers seek solace and find themselves part of a Company of Good Cheer Hazzley is at loose ends, even three years after the death of her husband. When her longtime friend Cassandra, caf owner and occasional dance-class partner, suggests that she start up a conversation group, Hazzley posts a notice on the community board at the local grocery store. Four people turn up for the first meeting: Gwen, a recently widowed retiree in her early sixties, who finds herself pet-sitting a cantankerous parrot; Chiyo, a forty-year-old fitness instructor who cared for her unyielding but gossip-loving mother through the final days of her life; Addie, a woman pre-emptively grieving a close friend who is seriously ill; and Tom, an antiques dealer and amateur poet who, deprived of home baking since becoming a widower, comes to the first meeting hoping cake will be served. Before long, they are joined by Allam, a Syrian refugee with his own story to tell. These six strangers are learning that beginnings can be possible at any stage of life. But as they tell their stories, they must navigate what is shared and what is withheld. Which version of the truth will be revealed? Who is prepared to step up when help is needed? This moving, funny and deeply empathic new novel from acclaimed author Frances Itani reminds us that life, with all its twists and turns, never loses its capacity to surprise.

4⭐️ I was quite surprised by this book and when my Tuesday evening library#bookclub had selected this book, I wasn‘t quite sure to make of it. I really didn‘t know what it was about. But when I got into the book, I found myself wanting to more about the characters and I found it to be very compelling. #2024 #fiction #contemporary #canadian #literaryfiction

Really loved this. It‘s compassionate, lovely, caring, it speaks to grief and hope and community, and the ability to always start again. The small step. This was inspiring. I will re-read this. 4.5/5

This was my first book by Frances Itani and I found it very moving. It had a Maeve Binchy vibe.

It's always lovely to spend time reading a Frances Itani. This one reminded me a lot of a Maeve Binchy story.

In terms of finding it on the Longlist for the Giller prize, I see the chances as being quite low. I don't think this is the type of novel that usually finds its way onto a literary prize longlist. I still enjoyed my time with a new Itani though.

Lindy I‘ve been having a similar experience: lots of perfectly nice books, but few that seem award-worthy. 😕 4y
Penny_LiteraryHoarders @Lindy it's been a bit of a bummer!! I'm trying to figure out now what my thoughts are for the Longist - I'm just going to be guessing a quite a few at this point! It's coming up so soon! 4y

Ahhh, finally it's Friday! It's also very thunderstormy so it's a perfect night to settle in with a good book and a big glass of wine. ⛈

Ahhhh the sign of a great book for me! Look at the lovely detail used for the sections and the chapter headings have titles also nicely designed.

Itani never lets me down. Hoping her latest is a great read for me!
