Art in Nature
Art in Nature | Tove Jansson
10 posts | 3 read | 7 to read
An elderly caretaker at a large outdoor exhibition, called Art in Nature, finds that a couple have lingered on to bicker about the value of a picture; he has a surprising suggestion that will resolve both their row and his own ambivalence about the art market. A draughtsman's obsession with drawing locomotives provides a dark twist to a love story. A cartoonist takes over the work of a colleague who has suffered a nervous breakdown only to discover that his own sanity is in danger. In these witty, sharp, often disquieting stories, Tove Jansson reveals the fault-lines in our relationship with art, both as artists and as consumers. Obsession, ambition, and the discouragement of critics are all brought into focus in these wise and cautionary tales.

I'm so sorry to clutter your feed with a picture of a lemon ?, but I couldn't resist buying this amazing fruit, it looked so tempting! Now, to justify buying it, I'm making a White Lady cocktail ?, and to justify posting about it, I'm going to read the story in which I first came across the drink, Tove Jansson's eponymous "White Lady" from the tagged story collection ???

TieDyeDude I'm glad you got that all sorted BEFORE you started drinking 😅 7mo
Bookwomble @TieDyeDude I genuinely fell in love with that lemon first then had to think of something to do with it 😄 It's an Italian Amalfi lemon, and a tad more expensive than your common lemon, so a bit of a treat, but it sure did taste good, even before I added it to gin! 7mo
batsy Never apologise for lovely photos! It's like a still life painting featuring lemon 😁🍋 7mo
Anna40 😆 I like the lemon too. It‘s gray here in the north of Michigan so sunny yellow is nice 😉 7mo

One of the stories in this collection is "White Lady", about a group of friends of a certain age, & their night out at a restaurant, mingling with some bright-young-things.
Their tipple of preference is the White Lady, which I've made for myself here: half gin, one quarter Cointreau, one quarter fresh lemon juice, shaken over ice and garnished with a twist of lemon peel ???

TrishB And there‘s me with just a beer.... 4y
Bookwomble @TrishB At least you can enjoy a few beers - I'd like another White Lady, but I can't hold my liquor! 😝 4y
saresmoore I think one of those tipples would topple me, 🤪 but I‘m stacking the book for sure! 4y
Bookwomble @saresmoore I'd hope you will love the book, and perhaps when you're not on child and baby duty, you could sneak a try at the cocktail 😃🍸 4y

Pickpick

Tove's short stories are quiet and incisive (I've seen them described as boring, which is, of course, a matter of personal taste, but also wrong!) even when she writes about obsession and murder. Mostly, though, these stories are about the small happenings in ordinary lives which give clues to the deep emotions underlying the actions of her characters, and that, for me, is where the interest and value of Tove's stories lie.

"The caretaker liked the evenings and the nights. He didn't need much sleep and often sat by himself in the peace and quiet of the lake shore for hours. He didn't remember, he didn't worry, he just was."

I usually find Tove's writings for adults calming and tranquil, which is very much on the 'Required' list at the moment 🧘🏻‍♂️

Pickpick

Tove Jansson strips away noisy distractions and illuminates the simple elements of life. It's wonderfully calming, even as some stories are dark or profound. E.g. "She discovered that champagne in the morning gave the day a promising lustre." Her respect for craftspeople and diverse characters shines through. A treat.
