THE TWO HOTEL FRANCFORTS was exactly what I needed: a tense, intensely focused look at one American refugee‘s sojourn in 1940 Lisbon. Leavitt‘s prose is both perfect for the time period and clear to contemporary readers. His characters feel achingly real in their flaws and desires. The emotions ring true throughout. I can‘t wait to share this particular book with at least three people, then explore the rest of his hefty bibliography myself.
