The Penguin Book of Christmas Stories
The Penguin Book of Christmas Stories: From Hans Christian Andersen to Angela Carter | Jessica Harrison
11 posts | 4 read | 1 reading | 8 to read
The perfect gift this Christmas season: a generous selection of some of the greatest festive stories of all time This is a collection of the most magical, moving, chilling and surprising Christmas stories from around the world, taking us from frozen Nordic woods to glittering Paris, a New York speakeasy to an English country house, bustling Lagos to midnight mass in Rio, and even outer space. Here are classic tales from writers including Truman Capote, Shirley Jackson, Dylan Thomas, Saki and Chekhov, as well as little-known treasures such as Italo Calvino's wry sideways look at Christmas consumerism, Wolfdietrich Schnurre's story of festive ingenuity in Berlin, Selma Lagerlof's enchanted forest in Sweden, and Irne Nemerovsky's dark family portrait. Featuring santas, ghosts, trolls, unexpected guests, curmudgeons and miracles, here is Christmas as imagined by some of the greatest short story writers of all time.

Went to B&N with my daughter last night and finally used some of my Xmas gift cards.
I know this is terrible news for people who give me gifts, but I‘m not really buying many books these days; we have a FANTASTIC library system and I‘m plumb out space for bookshelves.
I do love the Coralie Bickford- Smith covers though, so apparently I‘m now collecting them

Cuilin I love those covers 😍 2mo
darklydreaming Stunning 🤩 2mo
5feet.of.fury SO pretty 2mo

📘 Lots of short stories is wonderful for this time of year.
📘This time of year reading is picture books, short stories and rereads.
📘 Solstice I try to lean into winter and slowwwww down and BREATHE in the natural world.

#Midwintersolace

📘What are reading as we officially move into winter?
📘Do you have any reading rituals for the solstice?
📘Do you enjoy a different reading format at this time of year than your usual preference?
📘The approach to Christmas can be crazy.
Make sure you take a moment to celebrate the changing season.

I will be reading this one throughout the month like an advent calendar. There are 32 very short Christmas stories, some as little as 2 pages and most are under 10 pages. There is a variety of classic authors to more modern authors.

A really wonderful, and very varied, book of Christmas stories by a great selection of authors. With so many different stories I was never going to love every single one but as a collection as a whole it was very very good. I particularly appreciated the mix of more realistic and more magical stories and the inclusion of sadder toned stories like the Langston Hughes. The absolute standout for me was Angela Carter‘s.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.
This is day 42
