I found this author's books in a bookstore in Scotland. They are heavy on feminism and heavy on fantasy. I definitely appreciate what she does with them.

This was a favourite last year. I loved the panopticon and this didn't disappoint with the story of the occupants of an Edinburgh tenement over 100 years. Some spooky scenes, as well a cameo from William Burroughs who lived in the city for a while (sent me off searching about that). Can't wait to read her next book.
Jessie MacRae is the devil's daughter + arrives at an Edinburgh tenement in 1910 to give birth to a child for the evil landlord but finds love. Thru 90 years + 9 characters stories we follow the tales that emerge in 10 Luckenbooth, a house haunted by previous horrors. This was a wonderful read which had me gripped ,a story of love, evil that men do,+ghosts, I gasped at scenes but also laughed+ was moved. After loving panopticon can't wait for more
I adore Jenny Fagan‘s writing but this one just didn‘t catch me like usual. Maybe it‘s because it‘s to bright and summery. It‘s about a tenement in Edinburgh through the decades and the influence and story of the devil‘s daughter Jessie.

This extraordinary gothic tale takes place in an Edinburgh tenement, following the lives of all residents in overlapping stories over several decades. I devoured this in one sitting, it was so good.

Lore Olympus vol 1 and 2 - Rachel Smythe
A little princess- Frances Hodgson Burnett
Did the outdoor book & beer thing on this warm Friday afternoon. In theory, LUCKENBOOTH is totally my book, but in practice I feel like it keeps asking me to make intuitive leaps without the textual or emotional base I need to do so. I don‘t dislike it, exactly, but I‘m not sure if I‘ll finish it.
I didn‘t get to finish my long-awaited Queer Beer because I somehow put the glass down wrong and spilled half of it. I honestly almost cried.😔 #gaymay
A bracing romp through the 20th century in Edinburgh, starting with arrival of the devil‘s daughter in 1910 and tying up the loose ends of her fate in 1999. There‘s a fascinating cast of mostly queer characters who, over the years, happen to live in the same building, folded into the history of the city & the larger world. A touch of horror, more than a few ghosts, and a large dollop of redemption. #LGBTQ #Scotland
— I didn‘t know poets were so well informed, Mr Burroughs.
— Don‘t trust poets unless they are scientists.

…films of novels make me uneasy. They‘re trying to steal words & put them into boxes. It‘s not where the worlds of novels are meant to be. My words exist in here you see, in my mind. Then they exist in your mind. Nobody else gets to see how they pass between us — it is a form of alchemy! Of all the art forms writing is the most intimate & strange.
They say we are helpless, they say we are weak, they say we are nothing … they are liars!
His niece‘s set-up at Blossom‘s My Little Pony stables is highly elaborate. First off, Cupcake & Rosedust will bitch about Princess Sparkle. They‘ll talk about how disappointing she is. That she can‘t just be cheerful like them. They will cut her pony tail off. Write all over her stable in coloured pencil. They will steal her favourite things. Then they will trot off, very smug & happy with themselves.
My online attendance at the Edinburgh International Book Festival started at 6 am today. Jenni Fagan, Caleb Femi and Graeme Armstrong are in the event Take Your Place, looking at sense of home and relationship to place in their writing.
Fairytale, fantasy, refracted horror from shards of lives spanning 1910 to the 1990‘s: gangsters, mediums, loners, a miner allergic to light, 6 red-haired sisters, a criminal Minister of Culture, and the devil‘s own daughter who curses number 10 Luckenbooth, Edinburgh. Plus William Burroughs in a cameo turn!
This follows the lives of the residents of Luckenbooth close over 9 decades. Fun stories, a rich history of Edinburgh, interesting characters and eerie at times
Overall I really enjoyed this book and learned something new about my hometown, slightly let down by too many cliches but still kept me interested throughout

A gothic novel set in my hometown of Edinburgh and a Scottish narrator, what more could I ask for? 😃
