Blaze Island
Blaze Island | Catherine Bush
8 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
For those who loved Barbara Kingsolver's Flight Behaviorcomes a new climate-themed, Shakespeare-inspired novel from bestselling author Catherine Bush. The time is now or an alternate near now, the world close to our own. A mammoth Category Five hurricane sweeps up the eastern seaboard of North America, leaving devastation in its wake, its outer wings brushing over tiny Blaze Island in the North Atlantic. Just as the storm disrupts the present, it stirs up the past: Miranda's memories of growing up in an isolated, wind-swept cove and the events of long ago that her father will not allow her to speak of. In the aftermath of the storm, she finds herself in a world altered so quickly and so radically that she hardly knows what has happened. As Miranda says, change is clear after it happens.

@TheKidUpstairs Though #NYWD22 is over, there are still some titles on your list I‘m planning to read! With the exception of the tagged (Blaze Island), I‘ve purchased all of them — the top in print & the bottom as audiobooks. I‘m not sure *when* it will happen…but it absolutely will.

I‘ll be sure to tag you when I dive in! 🏊‍♀️

TheKidUpstairs Yay! I'm so glad you liked my list enough to continue. I certainly plan on reading more from yours throughout the year. I bought Stiff, and the rest I can access through local libraries. I'll be sure to tag you when I read them! 2y

This is my #NYWDProgressReport! Feel free to post your own. 😊

So far, I‘ve read (& enjoyed) the top 3 books. By the end of the month, I‘m hoping to finish the bottom 3.

I‘ve already downloaded both Interior Chinatown & The Art of Leaving from Audible.

The final title is a bit uncertain. It will either be Blaze Island or Hamnet, depending on if my request for the former is filled. It‘s not easy to find in the States!

monalyisha @TheKidUpstairs I‘m taking a slight break for the next week. I‘ll be on vacation with my Mom in Florida (filled with both dread & anticipation due to Covid numbers; wish me luck!). I‘m going to indulge myself by reading books as the mood strikes. But I‘ll be back to your wonderful list soon! 2y
TheKidUpstairs @monalyisha enjoy your vacation and mood reading! My mom was in Florida recently, and she said not wanting to go out too much because of the numbers was a great excuse to just relax and read lots 👍 I'll be interested to hear how Interior Chinatown works on audio. It's an interesting format that could work really well on audio if done right! 2y
monalyisha @TheKidUpstairs Thanks! I do have a print copy of Interior Chinatown, as well, if it doesn‘t work out. I think I read a review of the audio somewhere that indicated it was a good choice, though. I shall keep you abreast! 2y

Beautifully evocative novel, inspired by The Tempest, combining themes of climate change, family relations, and isolation. Can we ever really protect those we love? What is the cost of shielding them from the world? What are we leaving behind? How should we live? On a small island off the coast of Newfoundland, these questions and more gather, crash together, and tear apart. Anxiety and uncertainty battle with beauty and nature.

1. Loving the tagged so far.
2. Everyone Knows Your Mother is a Witch
3. Kids are going back to school! 🎉🎉🎉 And I just found out my younger son has a FANTASTIC grade one teacher. She was my oldest's teacher in grade one and asked just so so wonderful at guiding learners through such a big transition year.

Pickpick

A bracing blend of up-to-the-minute climate fiction and Shakespearean drama, the setting of this Canadian novel is based on Fogo Island, which is off the coast of Newfoundland. A father and his daughter have taken refuge on this island but destructive forces are at play. It opens with a breathtaking storm, the narrative is richly layered, the prose is evocative, and the ending is thought-provoking. #CanLit

“There are people out there who don‘t believe ice and snow are weather. We are entering times of dangerous weather and that weather is inside us as well as outside.”

…the icebergs glistened, every colour in the spectrum of blue and green: cobalt, turquoise, aquamarine, emerald. From one angle they looked like one thing, from another something else. As the icebergs turned, they revealed arches, hollows, ponds, fissures. It was hard to know how to describe them other than to compare them to other things: this one‘s a castle, no, no, a dragon.
