I highly enjoyed this spooky supernatural police case. However, I did not care for the multiple typos and formatting mistakes.

Interesting premise that didn't quite come together for me. It's part fairy tale, part police procedural, somewhat reminiscent of Lauren Beukes, but not as well put together. It includes some interesting history about Chicago, but it's delivered by characters who sound like they're reading internet search results. And I don't think the MC could have gotten a master's degree in lit and then joined the police and made detective by age 25.

We Came From An Island by Cynthia Pelayo is collection of three short stories that center around families facing trauma and the strength it takes to endure.

Every now and then, I read a book and then sit for hours trying to come up with any words to put down for my review… this was one of those books.

Retelling of Pied Piper set in Chicago, kids are turning up dead and while others consider gang involvement, clues point to the Grimm‘s Fairytale. MC is a detective whose sister died under similar suspicious circumstances when she was young.

1) this could have used another pass to develop the style. There is 0 atmosphere and it needs it.

2) omg STOP MAKING EVERYONE 25. Age and distance would have made sense here.

Liking this one, and love this quote.

Pied Piper retelling set in gritty modern Chicago with plenty of allusions to other Grimms tales.

The MC (Lauren) has a traumatic past (and present) and I wish that was leaned into a bit more, all this murder and magic afoot could use an unreliable narrator, but mid-way that doesn‘t seem to be what‘s happening..

Excited to see how it comes together. makes me want to know more about OG Fairytales 🧚‍♀️

The storyline of Children of Chicago is an incredibly promising one. The creepy foreshadowing kept me turning the page and Pelayo successfully created some vividly chilling horror scenes. Her idea here was creative and, had I liked this more, I might even call it frightening. I think, at the very least, the story started off well. Beyond that, there wasn‘t much that I enjoyed.
