The Speed of Light
The Speed of Light | Elissa Grossell Dickey

A compelling and provocative debut novel told in intersecting timelines over a tumultuous, defining year in one woman’s life.
Simone is trying her best not to think of what she’s lost. Diagnosed with MS, she awaits the results of another anxiety-inducing MRI. She’s just walked away from Connor, “a fixer” but possibly the love of her life. And nearing the holidays, the sights and sounds of winter in South Dakota only prick memories of better years gone by. Then, on a December morning at the university where she works, jarring gunshots pierce the halls. In a temporary safe place and terrified, Simone listens and pretends this will all be over soon.
As she waits for silence, her mind racing, Simone’s past year comes into focus. Falling in love and missing it. Finding strength in family and enduring friendships. Planning for the future, fearing it, and hoping against hope in dark places. Her life has been changing at the speed of light, and each crossroad brought Simone here, to this day, to endure the things she can’t control and to confront those that she can.

I had a hard time rating this book. I toggled between 3.5 and 5 stars. It was a very good story, but there were some plot holes that the editor should have caught so this debut could have been a smash hit. We never learn the motive for the on-campus shooting. We get an idea of what it could be, but everyone who reads the book could think something different as to why because we aren't really given any clues. (Continued in comments)

Well_Read_Redhead We also never find out why a particular character's wife/marriage is mentioned as if there is something going on. Was there cheating? Did she suspect he was involved in something sinister? Why mentioned it if we never know? 3y
Well_Read_Redhead After digesting the book since finishing last evening, I have to give it 3.5 stars rounded to 4 because of the good story. Major plot holes like these in a debut novel really can't go unmentioned. Otherwise, it would have been 5 stars for me. 3y

This fiction contemporary romance was interesting. Simone gets diagnosed with MS, this changes her life and attitude toward it, until fate comes along to show her what life is really about. Nice romantic ending, strong woman character I enjoyed learning about. Definitely a realistic read, but fiction. #amazon #contemporary #romance #fiction #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks How much money did I win, Sarah?. 🤣🤣 #BINGO yippee

It took me a while to finally pick this one up because I don't really do thrillers often. However once I did, I enjoyed it. (Probably because that aspect of it wasn't the main feature.) It has an intersecting timeline, flashing between the present, where Simone is involved in an active shooter situation at work, and her past year, when she had been diagnosed with MS and her struggling to make sense of her future.

Wow, this story knew how to keep you hooked. The story alternates between about a one hour period currently during an active shooter event at a college and flashbacks over the last year of the main characters life. The storytelling is done well too. This book puts you right there in the middle of a scary & traumatic situation, while also walking you through someone learning how to adjust to life with an MS diagnosis. Quick read.

This is so good! Set in South Dakota, a tragic event happens in the first chapter of Part 1. Then we track back a year to meet Simone, her bff, her budding romance, supporting characters, and her chronic illness. As a new Part begins, a short chapter takes us back to the tragic event. You want to know how it plays out but reading Simone‘s story in following chapters is just as interesting.

marleed @rachelm I couldn‘t help but think of your online chat with D.J. Dell‘Antiona last Thursday. This is my 3rd book this year from a Midwest author publishing her first book - all three fully captivated me! 4y
