An investigator must solve a brutal murder on a claustrophobic space station in this tense science fiction thriller from the author of Salvation Day. Hester Marley used to have a plan for her life. But when a catastrophic attack left her injured, indebted, and stranded far from home, she was forced to take a dead-end security job with a powerful mining company in the asteroid belt. Now she spends her days investigating petty crimes to help her employer maximize its profits. She's surprised to hear from an old friend and fellow victim of the terrorist attack that ruined her life--and that surprise quickly turns to suspicion when he claims to have discovered something shocking about their shared history and the tragedy that neither of them can leave behind. Before Hester can learn more, her friend is violently murdered at a remote asteroid mine. Hester joins the investigation to find the truth, both about her friend's death and the information he believed he had uncovered. But catching a killer is only the beginning of Hester's worries, and she soon realizes that everything she learns about her friend, his fellow miners, and the outpost they call home brings her closer to revealing secrets that very powerful and very dangerous people would rather keep hidden in the depths of space.

Hester, an AI expert, is working as a security officer for the company to pay off her medical bills after surviving a terrorist attack. She now has a prosthetic left eye, ear, arm and leg. She receives an unexpected encrypted message from another survivor. Before she can respond, he is dead. She asks to be assigned to the team on his case. I really enjoyed this sci-fi mystery. I had one aspect figured out, but it didn‘t take anything away.

Reggie Stacked because I loved Salvation Day. 2y
Nute Oooh, stacking! It‘s my kind of story!🤗 2y
Bookzombie @Reggie I enjoyed Salvation Day more, but this was still really good. It looks like her next book is going to be a middle grade fantasy out this year. 2y
Bookzombie @Nute I hope you enjoy it when you get to it! 🙂 2y

I'm decidedly not a sci-fi reader, but add a murder mystery and you might just pull me in. This was engaging, science-heavy without leaving me behind, and fast-paced. You can't ask for more when it's not your genre.

#booked2021 #nonfictionscienceorsciencefictionwrittenbyawoman @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft oh my gosh I actually finished the Winter challenge!!!!

ferskner @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft I haven't received emails in order to submit my books for the quarter. What's the best way to do that? 2y
Cinfhen Congrats on completing winter ❄️ we don‘t send email reminders, that‘s something we should probably look into but we post the link on Litsy several times a quarter… here it is:

Cinfhen Just fill in the books you‘ve read that you haven‘t submitted in the past!! Each book earns you a chance for the drawing 💚📚good luck 🍀 2y
ferskner @Cinfhen oh awesome! Sorry, I thought the email I got when I signed up for the challenge said something about getting emails each quarter to submit books. I've been very spotty on Litsy this year so I've missed all the reminders, hahaha! 2y

Hester is stuck in a bit of a dead end job in order to pay back medical bills from a catastrophic injury. She gets a message from David, who was caught in the same incident that injured her, and he winds up dead the next day. She goes to the asteroid mine where he was working to investigate. This is a terrific sci-fi mystery that kept me guessing, had great twists and turns, and such a creative location. I can‘t wait for her next book!

vivastory This sounds fantastic! 3y
Hooked_on_books @vivastory Her previous book is also really good: 3y

I love mysteries, I love scifi, and Dead Space puts those genres together in a fascinating and compelling way. Hester was an enigma suffering with massive trauma both physical and mental. I love that she had a disability and that it was a part of her on every page and I thought her struggles were well done. The cast of this story are unique and there is much representation of queer and nonbinary characters that are very much a part of the story.
