A suspenseful, transporting literary thriller about a British novelist who heads to Venice after a public breakdown, by Christine Mangan, the bestselling author of Tangerine. Its 1966 and Frankie Croy needs a break. Having achieved success with her debut bestseller, shes been trying desperately to live up to the high expectations of her editor and fans, only to fall short with each new book. When she receives a possible career-ending review and then has a very public breakdown, she retreats to her friends vacant palazzo in Venice in the hopes the new setting will rejuvenate her creativity and inspire her writing. But she finds that shes just as stuck. And then she meets a fellow British expat, a precocious young fan named Gilly who is eager to befriend her favorite author at all costs. An aspiring writer, Gilly worms herself into Frankies Venetian life and the two begin an uneasy companionship. Frankie is skeptical of someone so relentlessly chipper, and Gilly tells stories that seem too good to be true, and in fact some of them are. This complicated web of desperate friendship, half-truths, and white liesall set against a once-in-a-generation storm that inundates Venice and leaves it floodedwill lead Frankie to make a choice that is impossible to undo. A gorgeously rendered and twisted tale of art and ambition, Palace of the Drowned is a literary thriller that asks just how far one is willing to go to achieve success.

Mehso-so

This didn‘t really work for me although there were elements I liked - the setting of Venice and the Gothic novel tones. Mostly though I was left wondering what the point of it all was. It didn‘t feel that suspenseful, the ending fell flat and it‘s one of those where you wish the characters would just communicate! Definitely a good book for the #titlesandtunes #dramaqueen though 👑

This book was a random pick in Waterstones a little while ago, not seen any reviews on it so hoping it‘s a good one. And this song and album by Marina just has a whole #dramaqueen vibe 👸 #titlesandtunes

Cinfhen Can‘t wait to hear about this book! 8mo
Cinfhen Not familiar with the song but it looks like a perfect fit 😍 8mo

Bailedbailed

Here‘s my review for a book I DNF‘d.

I started this book. For the first 10 chapters of this book, the story was moving slow and I felt like nothing was happening in the story but it seems like the story is getting interesting now. I‘ve been bailing on books all month but I‘m hoping that I like this one enough to finish it. It‘s great that I‘m learning how to DNF books when I‘m not enjoying them but I also want to finish books. I don‘t just want to bail on books all month.

I couldn‘t decide what book to read next so my wheel spinner picked Palace Of The Drowned. I‘m still trying to choose a book for #theunreadshelfproject monthly prompt of reading a book that I will enjoy. The 5 books I DNF‘d this month were books I thought I would enjoy but I didn‘t. Maybe I should pick something from an author I‘ve read books from before. I just want to finish reading a book.

Pickpick

A British writer in the 60s has a nervous breakdown and goes to stay at her friend‘s family home in Venice. While there she meets an eager young fan, and begins to question her state of mind and her own memories. I love an expat novel, so this was great for me, very moody and atmospheric.

Pickpick

A solid 3.5 read. Good use of gothic tropes and well evoked sense of place. A disappointingly predictable ending.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I love this!! 3y
