As much a study of horror as a genre as it is a queer horror story. Demchuk goes Vonnegut and inserts himself and real historical events into the story. This left me with questions but I felt like that was done purposefully. It was graphic, gory, and creepy, but also highlighted the strength, resilience and interconnectedness of the queer community in a unique way. Just wow!

#GroupL @Michael_Gee this went off to you on Saturday. I loved this book. It‘s about a boogeyman on the streets of 1980s Toronto targeting gay men. Not only did Demchuk‘s talented writing creep me the hell out, he also talked about queer community. One that is resilient and is capable of caring for and loving one each other when it feels like no one else in the world seems to care. Pick!

I read a review by @kwmg40 and stacked and read - and loved it. Explores an LGBTQ+ community in Toronto from 1984-2016, men from the community go missing, and members of the community are trying to figure that out while dealing with prejudice/discrimination/apathy from the police and general public and their own fears - there is a supernatural element. The author also inserts himself into this story. (more below)

I am on vacation at Chautauqua the week of this readathon so I will be spending my days and evenings in social activities, to be realistic and to keep my reading going I will make a goal of 20 hours of reading -

This is a horror story about men mysteriously disappearing from Toronto's gay village, reflecting real-life events that happened in the city. I found this book deeply disturbing and provocative. I recommend it with reservations, as it's quite graphic and the format is unusual, but wow, Demchuk sure can write horror!

The book itself started out interesting, following the lives of gay men who disappear from Toronto. Starting in 1984 and going to 2016, I felt the time jumps were very abrupt. We would be in one time line, and the next chapter would be in a new year, following new characters. It got to be too much, too many people.

I enjoyed the supernatural aspect of this and wanted more. And I didn't understand the ending at the dinner party.

Inspired by the murders, disappearances, and fear of the LGBTQ in Toronto (and elsewhere), this is a horror novel. It becomes a memoir when the author adds his own experiences after each chapter. And then the author breaks the fourth wall by interacting with the characters. Something rare. It is an experience.

Once the last lines were read, I had stopped what I was doing, and was simply experiencing. That doesn‘t happen often.
