The Angel of Grozny: Orphans of a Forgotten War
The Angel of Grozny: Orphans of a Forgotten War | Sne Seierstad
4 posts | 5 read | 1 to read
In the early hours of New Year's Eve 1994, Russian troops invaded Chechnya, plunging the country into a prolonged and bloody conflict. A foreign correspondent in Moscow at the time, sne Seierstad traveled regularly to Chechnya to report on the war, describing its effects on those trying to live their daily lives amidst violence. Over the course of a decade, she traveled in secret and under the constant threat of danger. In a broken and devastated society, Seierstad lived amongst the wounded and the lost. And she lived with the orphans of Grozny, those who will shape the country's future, asking the question: what happens to children who grow up surrounded by war and accustomed to violence?

I've never read much about Chechenya, so this book taught me a lot. I also think Seierstad's strength is that she manages to show people from both sides of the conflict: people who hurt, who grieve, who hate, who fear, who love and who work for a better tomorrow. This, to me, balance make it clear that the conflict is not black and white, that understanding and redemption take work from both sides (as always).

Teachers of Litsy, are you as exhausted as I am? This long distance teaching has me working ALL the time 😅 Going to try to relax with a book now. #teachersoflitsy

Sace *snort* Distance. Rumor in our district is that they are going to start making teachers report to work "in shifts" and "following VDV guidelines" next week. And I'm still waiting for directions on how they want me to distance teach/grade for this marking period. 4y
Sace That should be CDC. Sorry. 🙄 4y
hermyknee @Sace that‘s so frustrating. Distance learning has been rough on us, too, but Dallas is in a total lockdown (shelter in place order) until April 30th so they can‘t make us report to work (even in shifts). We‘re having a hard time getting a hold of all kids/parents at our school, too. I have maybe 35% total participation across all my classes. 4y

Sace @hermyknee our Gov will probably not give the shelter in place order. At all. Ever. So all I can hope is that the city mayor has some sense. This is all frustrating because we still haven't had any official directives and it's making me anxious. 4y
Daisey I have to close my laptop at a certain point and turn the sound off on my phone to give myself a complete break sometimes. Being able to be outside in a rural area has helped get away from it at times. I feel my school is really trying to work with everyone, but it is difficult to get participation from several students. 4y
HannaPolkadots @Sace @hermyknee @Daisey - I'm cheering us all on!👏👏🙌 we've been in lockdown for three weeks now, and with few directives on HOW to actually function. Participation is difficult to achieve, but we've been told not to take attendance, so basically students can choose to do what they want. Like you said, @Daisey - closing the computer, turn the sound on the phone off and go outside. That might keep me sane😅 4y
Sace @HannaPolkadots @hermyknee @Daisey and we've been told NOTHING and we officially start distance learning on Monday. No word about attendance. No word about what to do if a child has no access. How to proceed with grades. What will happen with seniors. Nothing. 4y

At the time of the war in Chechnya, Åsne Seierstad was a Moscow based Norwegian reporter who was one of the few to cover the war. She returned to Grozny to find it a changed place. The novel is fascinating, purely to learn more about a part of the world the West still does not know much about, and how Chechnya has now been completely rebuilt, albeit with a culture of oppression and dictatorship now existing.
