I absolutely loved this book! I was intrigued the whole time. There were at least 3 times in this book where my mouth dropped. There were twists and turns but also a lot of heavy topics and conversations of what it was like to live in the 50s as a woman. Also, some of those things are still around today. It is very beautifully written and hard-hitting. 5/5

I know if I was a house wife in the 50‘s I would not have survived. This isn‘t some flashy, twisty story but it‘s a good story nonetheless. It does have a twist and one I did not see coming. What makes this a good story is it reminds us of our dark history in how women were regarded if they weren‘t happy and willing to do that ever it took to be the perfect house wife. There may be some triggers for some people just FYI.

Doing a #weirdwords thing and a book review all in one! Beautifully written book based on TOO MANY instances of women having very normal FEELINGS of sadness, being overwhelmed, under-appreciated, you name it. You‘re not sad, you‘re hysterical! Let‘s do a little ECT or maybe a lobotomy and see if that helps! Let‘s not forget how many women were misdiagnosed (unnecessary suffering)! The epilogue is 🔥 #weirdwordwednesday

I didn‘t expect to listen to this in one day, but I was totally hooked! Taking place over 1955, the book opens just before the Mayfields host their annual New Year‘s party. Lulu spends most of her time imagining how she would decorate the empty house across the street rather than stick to the Good Housekeeping schedule like the rest of the neighborhood wives. Lulu‘s obsession with the house across the street increases when a few family moves in.

This author is an automatic go to for me. I read her first two books and grabbed this one as soon as I could. It is her best yet. Though the other two were so good too.
Living in this timeframe had to be so hard for women. The 1950s. It's before I was even born so I wonder how the women in my family dealt. The best they could I suppose.

The eerie cover of this book sets the stage for the haunting pages within - are the eyes blacked out to symbolize the loss of identity when conforming to the ideal suburban woman role? Or not feeling seen, heard, or understood? Not knowing if she is seeing reality? Feeling trapped and suffocated? One thing is for sure: Lulu‘s carefully crafted 1950‘s housewife facade is jiggling as much as one of her perfect jello salads. ⬇️

My second book by Meagan Church and I love how she is not afraid to tackle the difficult and infuriating topics in history, especially those pertaining to girls/women. A challenging and well-written piece of historical fiction.

This book made me sad and angry but it was so well written. I hope we aren‘t headed back to this lifestyle where women have no autonomy. Yikes.

Lulu is a house wife living for everyone else. She wants to be the perfect wife, and has stayed in character until new neighbors move across the street from her. They seem like they‘re hiding something, and she‘s determined to find out what it is. I really liked most of the characters, although the story felt a little flat for me towards the end. I wanted to know more about lulu‘s relationships with brother and mother. Still enjoyed it. Fast read.

The kind of tale that absorbs you and infuriates you all at once. The writing placed you there, firmly settled in her psyche, seeing things as she sees it and feelings as she feels it. All of it. And such a satisfying ending.
